I have the oppn. to pick up a Colt 614 for $18.5K or a BFI conversion for $16K -- both are on FM 4s out of state, so double stamps, etc..

Both prices are about $2K under dealer.

Which way to go?

The Colt without a question.

Given the cost of transferable MGs, it is, even if you intend to shoot it - an investment.

At a $2,500 difference between those two, the Colt is a factory original piece, and it looks like it comes with original parts.

The BFI looks like an Essential Arms cast receiver Form 1 conversion.

The Colt will appreciate better, and, should you ever need to sell it, sell faster, and for more.

Colt, no question. Stay away from the cast receiver.

No contest. Get the Colt. It is a factory Machinegun that will be plug and play with all uppers, stocks, etc. That BFI conversion was done on an essential arms cast lower, which is the least desirable registered receiver in my opinion. The 614 has been a real sleeper lately. Seemingly many good deals on them lately.

I can't believe the BFI is even going for that much.

Colt and you'll never, ever regret it.

Colt all the way, BFI shouldn't even be considered with a Colt being an option.

Colt no question

The BFI is likely cast and in general a much less desirable lower. Plus by time you have it looked at by a gun smith, worked on to get it in spec and and reanodized you're looking at like $17k vs $18.5k

Also they may be $2k under dealer price but those are IMO realistic prices as dealers often have large mark ups

Those cast receivers were known for being out of spec. The colt is a no brainier.

As the owner of two non-Colt receivers (forged Olys) its a no-brainer to go Colt for 2K over a cast EA receiver.

Why in the heck would be pay $19k for a EA cast lower when he can get a forged Colt 614 for $500 less or a cast EA for $3k less.

II'd be hesitant to buy that.  I could easily see the ATF saying since it was not assembled prior to the cut off date it is now a post sample weapon.

Someone not to long ago had a un-assembled and un-anodized oly arms lower that had been registered right before the cut off but never assembled. As long as it was properly registered prior to may 1986 it doesnt matter what state the lower was kept in.

Also there is no way to prove a lower was never assembled into a fully functioning firearm. And FWIW plenty of people sell MGs claiming they are pristine, never fire, stored in a safe for the last 30 years, etc.... My M16 was supposedly "barely fired" but when i got it there was gunpowder caked and baked on the inside and it had been run so hard the buffer actually broke and the weights disintegrated into powder in the buffer tube...barely fired my a$$!

But I got a great deal and knew the never fired BS is just something all sellers say.

If you're going to shoot it a lot, I would just get the Bushmaster conversion.  The $2500 difference would buy a lot of ammo.

If you're looking for a safe queen or don't plan to shoot much, go for the Colt.

Both of these will appreciate but their rates will be different.

You should 100% absolutely get the Colt.

I don't think anyone has said this yet.  However, I'd recommend the Colt.

If the BFI was done on a Sendra forged lower, and the $2500 difference was a big difference to you, then sure the BFI would be fine.

But only $2500 difference between a cast lower and a factory Colt - the choice is clear.

this plus a bazillion.   I recently passed on a BFI conversion on a forged lower, after all the years of hearing how much better they were than an Oly, I was very disappointed.  An off the shelf LMT or Colt upper wouldn't fit and there were other issues.   Kick myself for passing on a couple Olys waiting for a BFI to surface.

Thanks to all for the great advice, I truly appreciate it. Did not know about cast v. forged! R/L, the 614 hasn't budged at $18.5K and I'm wondering if things are cooling down a bit... I'll keep this thread updated!

Fwiw prices have never gone down since 1986, so I wouldn't wait around for them to fall.

My first thought as well- Colt vs cast seems like a no brainer, unless the discont were greater.

$18.5k for the 614 is a great deal. I recommend you buy it. You won't likely find a similarly priced Colt.

I had a semi auto sendra lower, the magwell was rough looking not broach cut.
