Looking into buying my first AOW (not first NFA item). I don't understand this comment from the seller "Yes I can send to your FFL, but it is on a form 4 and that cannot be changed.". What does that mean exactly? $200 tax instead of $5 tax?

Still a $5 transfer tax if it is an aow. It's only $200 if you build the aow on a form 1.  Every transfer of ownership on an nfa item needs approval from atf. The item after it gets to your dealer and you purchase it will then need to be transferred to you on a form 4. You buy and then you wait.

Hope that makes some sense.

Eta: what is the aow?   ...and don't forget your transfer fees for nfa are usually at least triple what a regular gun would be due to your ffl having to hold it in his safe until you are approved

Form 4 to your dealer, $5 tax stamp.  Form 4 to you, another $5 tax stamp.  It's just going to take longer and cost an extra $5.  If the guy you're buying from is in your state it'd be quicker to just Form 4 it direct from him to you.

It's one of those Serbu Shorty Shotguns. He's not in the same state but says because it's a form 4 it's a $200 transfer? I agree, from everything I've read, my dealer fills out the $5 form 4 and then another $5 to me. My dealer's NFA fees are quite reasonable though, $50
