I was watching the Story of the Secret Service providing security for the Olympics on 60 minutes 2. During the story there was a discussion of Secret Service Snipers, and a short video of them training. One of the Snipers was shooting a left handed rifle, and being a lefty was wondering what rifle (and caliber) they are using. Also, is the rifle available to the general public?

Thanks,

Landwarrior...

There was an article in a gun rag a year or two ago about thier rifles. I can't remember the manufacturer, but I do remember that they use 7mm Remington mag for the additional range and power. The SS seems to have a thing about armor penetration since they also use .357Sig in their pistols.

Not sure of the rifle but the scope was a Leupold MK4.

Is the .357Sig supposed to be able to pierce armor better than 9mm, .40 or .45? The reason I ask is that I have a P229 in .40 and have been thinking about getting the .357 barrel.

FWIW - it is not .357 Sig.

It is 357 Sig

I think I read recently the Secret Service went to .300 Win.Mag. a while back.
Gotta love it.

.357Sig
.357 Sig
357 Sig
357SIG

As long as you don't try to ram a .357 Magnum into it, it'll be fine !!!!!

Of the mentioned handgun calibers, 357 sig has the best performance against armor. The bullet has a relatively small diameter and high velocity. I wonder how it would compare to 7.62x25 (isn't that the tokarov caliber?) in this respect.

They probably do use 300 win mag because like the marines. I imagine the rifle probably was remington, that seem to be the norm with the goverment.
