I have a few, but my favorite wives tale is the one about Damascus barrels being unsafe. The funniest part is the fact that this wives tale only exists in America.
So what's yours? |

1) AK's are inaccurate junk and can't hit anything past about 25 yards
2) Small caliber rounds are designed to wound not kill |
|
-using your mag as a monopod will cause a jam
-Shooting steel will richochet -556 was designed to wound (eta someone beat me to it!) -Any "ALWAYS / NEVER" argument with regards to shooting technique |

" 556 tumbles when it hits flesh, so it stays inside the body and does more damage"

Revolvers are better for first time shooters.
30 carbine will not shoot through a winter coat. Longer barrels increase accurcy on scoped rifles. Guns kill Guns are made only to kill people |

Another good ballistics one:
".22LR only has enough energy to punch through one side of the rib cage, so it just bounces around inside and shreds your guts." Total nonsense lol |

Anything disparaging about French arms (FAMAS excepted) simply because their political leadership has historically been a mess; completely overlooking the fact that their fighting forces have typically been top notch or damn close to it (sounds like a military-political situation closer to home, doesn't it?).

A lightweight snub nosed 38 is the best gun for a lady.
A 50BMG will tear your flesh off if it comes close. An AR-15 will jam with a grain of sand. A VP9 will fail with a drop of water. A 45 hit to the arm will kill a man with the shock. A lady needs a 380 pocket pistol for home defense. |
|
Suppressors are only good for a few dozen rounds and then they are worn out.
Machine guns are illegal to own. I shot a deer at 700 yards with my 7mm and just a few inches of hold-over. It's against the law to make more than one firearm from an 80% receiver. Firearms made by you have to be destroyed when you die. I can't believe I didn't die of poisoning from all the bullshit people fed me growing up. |

You can buy guns on the Internet and have them shipped to your house.

Or.... when shooting someone on TV, inevitability the bullets impact will cause the bad guy to fly across the room....( depending on the "Action" rating.. ) |

I wrote this up before as a compendium of things people say about accuracy and what I figured out they actually mean:
100 yards: 100 feet shoots X MOA: once shot X MOA (not counting the fliers) shoots X MOA all day long: I stop shooting if I get a group larger than X MOA MOA: inches at 50 yards flier: any shot that would make my group too large group: a) the three best shots on the paper b) three shots from a warm barrel three-shot group: five shots, two of which are fliers X MOA group: two of the holes were X inches apart ...when using good ammo: ...when using the ammo I had that one time I got a good group minute of bad guy: inaccurate combat-accurate: inaccurate good enough to get the job done: inaccurate pretty good for a $90/60-year-old/mistreated gun: inaccurate when I do my part: when I get lucky I can do better: I'm pretty sure I could theoretically do better until the barrel heats up: until bullets pass down the bore offhand: off the bench field positions: off the bench prone: ...with sandbags sitting position: sitting at the bench kneeling: someone took the chair away from the bench iron sights: those things folded down under the scope |

Had an older gent tell me his M16 was made by mattel. Had another who was issued a m1 tanker. I doubt this. Hearing such makes me think they are making up there "service" if there was. No need to brag with tall tales.. One guy claims to own an original M1 tanker (its original because its stamped on the side). I think this guy is just a local stupid redneck and a real cheapskate. Hes never bought a single thing from me but has handled everything on my gunshow table like 5 dozen times.. He wont show me the tanker but mentions it EVERY time I see him. I have heard you can make a M16 single shot by chopping it behind the delta ring with a machete.. (cut the ga tube in half). This was told to us at church in boys youth group when the teachers were bashing the M16 and teaching us why it sucked. only in MS will you get this kind of info at church. Of course they told us bullets tumble also........ |

a snub-nosed revolver in .38spl is what all women should be buying.
simply cycling a pump shotgun will make bad guys shit themselves as they run away .45acp is so powerful... you can stand at 100 yards and catch 9mm bullets with a catchers mitt (I was actually told that once) .30 carbine bullets would bounce off North Korean soldiers wearing heavy winter uniforms machine guns are illegal a blast from a shotgun can knock you clear across a room birdshot is the best choice for home defense .22LR can't kill you OR is the preferred choice of professional hitmen (depending on who is bull-shitting you at the moment) ANY discussion about self-defense that assumes the good-guy is going to "win". |

All you have to do to make an AR full auto is file down the firing pin.
|

Make any gun full auto by 'filing the sear down'
'That gun is just for killing people' |

AK's don't jam
Nobody's after our guns You can't miss with a shotgun |
|
Nobody is after our guns.
HK hates us. Glocks don't jam. The only answer is Glock. Everyone is copying Glock 1911's jam a lot. VP9 with one drop of water will fail. Revolvers should not be used for carry or home defense. Shotguns with slugs or buck cannot kill. It has to have a light and optics plus an NVG and a laser or you cannot defend yourself. Saying .45 is old and only for dinosaurs and yet they carry a gun that shoots an even older cartridge because they can carry more. A Mk 23 is a crew served and yet it's the same length as a G17L almost and the G17L isn't a crew served. |
|
.45's got "knockdown power"
Open carry is stupid. Machine guns are illegal You need a special license for machine guns Guns are registered. |

I remember reading back in the day that the 22 Hornet was not very accurate, that if you could get a inch@100yds you were lucky, I was then able to get a barrel for my TCR and held right around a inch with factory Remington and much better once I started to load for it.

AK's are inaccurate but they never jam.
The "AR" in AR15 stands for Assault Rifle. 5.56/223 bullets tumble out of the barrel causing more damage. 5.56/223 bullets are designed to wound and not kill. All guns are registered. Filing down the firing pin will make an AR full auto. ARs constantly jam and are unreliable. A 50 bmg round fired from a M2 will tear the limbs off of someone if the bullet gets too close. A 12ga with buckshot/slugs will actually knock someone off their feet and cause them to fly backwards. Birdshot is the best choice for HD ammo when using a shotgun. 45acp has so much stopping power that one shot will knock someone off their feet. 22lr can't kill anyone. 22lr is great for HD. |

I'm amazed at how many people believe that the bullets actually go up and then down once they leave the barrel. They can't wrap their heads around the idea that they are looking at a downward angle in relation to the bullet trajectory. Sadly, this is especially prevalent in the Army.

Things NOT heard at the gun shop....
Hollow points work by opening up after they leave the barrel and flying like this [opens hand and rotates it as it moves] through the air. A light trigger on a carry gun will convince the jury you want to make it easier to kill. |
