I love my Ruger American Rimfire compact threaded, it's easily my favorite .22 rifle. The only thing I don't like is how slick the butt of the stock is on the gun. I'm looking for a slip on pad to add some traction but I don't want to add much length. All of the slip on lads I find have a big recoil cushion which I obviously don't need

Any suggestions?

They make a number of products for non slip foam pads self adhesive for shelving or even stairway treads with almost no thickness. You could just get one, trace the shape, cut and adhere. If it had a wood stock, I'd be tempted with a leather butt cuff.

I would imagine this would shred shirts and the gun case in short order.

When I was buying spray paint today I saw some that spray paint with grit in it.  The cap is covered in a sample of what it's like and it's about like medium grit sandpaper, that may be worth a look

I bought 6 inches of 1" wide rubber traction tape at the local hardware store. Trimmed it up a but to fit and it's not pretty but it works great.

Total cost: 37 cents.

Now take that and dip it in some plastidip. . You'll be a very happy camper. The PD will give you a nice coat, cleaning up what you're not happy with. Also giving you better "Traction"
