What is the quintessential .30-06 rifle?  If you could only ever own one, what would it be?  (I am excluding the M1 Garand from this)

Price wise, figure $1500 or less, nothing too exotic.

I know pretty much next-to-nothing about bolt action .30-06 rifles.

They get a lot of hate here but I LOVE my Ruger M77 Hawkeye in a mannlicher (spelling?) stock. It's an absolutely beautiful gun. It's also light weight so I can carry it all damn day through the woods and much more accurate than I thought it would be. Did I mention I think it's beautiful?

Much as I love my Garands, this puppy can shoot.

Pre-64 iron sighted Winchester 70 with a 3X9 Vari X  III on QD, two piece mounts.  Stocked in a sage green McMillan hunter profile stock.  Uncle Mikes swivels and a 1903, green biothane sling.

I'm more utilitarian that sentimental or historical, so I'd get one of these and call it a day.

Remington 700. Never shot a bolt gun so accurate in my life!

It's in my gun cabinet, Winchester pre 64 Model 70 Featherweight, with Redfield 70 receiver sight.

Colt-Sauer or Winchester.

My most accurate 30.06 is my Remington 03A4.  Made some hellacious shots with that when I lived in the mountains.

These days though, I'm real partial to the old M1 Garand.

I don't really "carry" a rifle through the mountains.  I can't sneak up on water, so I just sit down and watch for someone else to run a deer out of the brush.

For just a historical mil piece, a nice 03A3. But as a hunter- my ruger 77 hawkeye stainless with a boyd's pepper laminate monte carlo stock, and a nice bushnell 3-9 with ballistic reticle with quality base and rings. Accuurate, reliable, rugged, and well within the $1500 limit.

I have a Springfield '03, Garand and JC Higgins 30.06 w/ Mauser action that was given to me by my Uncle.

I love the '03 and Garand for their historical value, but the JC Higgins has taken a lot of deer from both him, before his passing, and me.

That's nice.  I don't have any Mannlicher stocked bolt guns, I really need to do something about that.  I really like the look of them.

Not a bolt-action but .........................

Repro Winchester 1895 rifle or carbine.

You can get a beater real-deal 1895 for $1,500 or so.

My 1932 Sedgley carbine, light and easy to carry, if you can see it you can hit it with open sights. Plus it's very classic looking

+1 for the Winchester 95, still a great rifle and the first gun that chambered the '06

A Winchester model 70, preferably Safari style or Super Grade. Maybe a Ruger 77 Guide Gun

I'd choose a P-17 for a classic, or a Tikka T3 for a modern gun.

When I was 14 I hunted with a friend I met though my grandparents who was 76 at the time, when I turned 18 he gave me a sporterized 03a3 with laymen sighs. So that would have to be it. I have 03a3s 1903s but some guns mean more that just physical value.

Weatherby Vanguard

bolt action that is built like a tank and will eat any kind of .30-06 load, plus they're decent shooters out of the box

but you can't go wrong with the Winchester Model 70 both pre and post 64

or a Mennonite Machine gun (Remington 760 and 7600)

I have to say that one gun I really miss is my Ruger 77 that I had back in the mid 80`s. Beautiful wood and bluing and shot like no other. Wish I still had it but my stupid teen self traded it in on a matte blue synthetic stock Win 70 when they first came out cuz it looked tacticool. Someone invent a time machine so I can go back and kick my own ass... among other things that I would change too...lol!
