Me and a few friends got a good deal on some 12" AR500 gongs and I made these stands for them. http://www.shooters101.com/images/online/12gong-1.JPG http://www.shooters101.com/images/online/12gong-2.JPG http://www.shooters101.com/images/online/12gong-3.JPG http://www.shooters101.com/images/online/12gong-4.JPG http://www.shooters101.com/images/online/12gong-5.JPG http://www.shooters101.com/images/online/12gong-6.JPG http://www.shooters101.com/images/online/12gong-7.JPG http://www.shooters101.com/images/online/12gong-8.JPG View Quote Those trees make a decent backstop ? I picked up 3 new AR500 targets yesterday. They are 36" tall by 18" by 1/2" thick and shaped very similar to a B27 target. They weigh about 50 pounds each also. They did not come with holes in them to attach hangers. I tired drilling them on my huge drill press and only succeeded in destroying all my big drill bits!!! So..... I am going to hang them by their "heads" with chain. I have tons of this old chain so if I happen to shoot through a chain then I can just replace it. I'll hace pics up later................................

We run several different size plates of AR500; 10x10's, up to 24x24'. Many of the plates are 3/8" thick but the larger plates are 1/4"...no reason for 3/8 when running them out at distance. I have also added a few diamonds into the mix. They are hard to hit...if elevation and windage are not damn close to precise, you'll miss them everytime. We have found that using the larger plates is awesome for practice (we predominantly shoot long range/precision rifle). Painting them all white allows for great feedback when they are 700-1200 yards out...you can see the impact, make adjustments, and send it again, with the hopes that that shot is more "bullseye" than the prior. |

My new ones................ They were heavy so I had to winch them up so I could bolt the chains.....see my attempt to drill a hole, LOL!! it didn't work hehehehe left shoulder area has a dimple that is where I destroyed all my drill bits! I tried a pilot hole, that didn't work, I tried a big bit, that didn't work, and I was using my drill press! http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e300/supv26/466B92CD-409E-4F0F-A9EA-BCA6837C9F67_zpsa3shk5yc.jpg 500 yards....................... http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e300/supv26/BD86FDC9-A7F5-4FE8-BAB5-719C144B004E_zpsuugjepno.jpg 400 yards with the 500 yard targets behind........................... http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e300/supv26/44604415-0088-4603-95AF-6748F6FD1D61_zpsb7rtdi9m.jpg 300 yards.................................... http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e300/supv26/9BDBCF34-C01C-4C8D-A2A1-532988B7D331_zpspa1lqsnq.jpg 300 yards through the spotting scope................... http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e300/supv26/414DE2E7-C4E4-4012-855E-5F7F6D377474_zpsbpmzfy9g.jpg I'll find someone with a plazma cutter to cut holes in them. For now I'll hand them and stay away from head and neck shots. I have tons of that chain so if I cut a chain I can just get another piece and hang them back up.................. View Quote I used to hang my steel with chains too...I bought the biggest, most durable chains that Lowe's had thinking it would be okay if it got hit. Of course, first day out...damn target is downrange dangling from one side, of course I hit the chain. Couldn't even take a 140gr VLD going 2950 ;) Obviously, once you get some holes poked, you'll be able to use other materials for hanging. I've found the cheap, rubber tarp straps with the "S" hooks are the best for the targets that are 12"x12" and under. The heavier guys get ratchet straps. You can grab them at Harbor Freight for about 3.00. |

I think I found some more steel plates for my range!! I think there are 4 of them, 3 will be 18"x36" and one will be 36"x36" square. All of them will be 1/2" AR500 and will have holes bored into them so they can be hung............................. pictures coming soon!!!

Well, I finally got my 800 yard target set up. The ground thawed out enough that I could drive some steel posts into the ground. This target is 31" x 35" and is 1/2" thick AR500. I used the winch on my 4 wheeler to hoist it up to attach the chains and had to stand on the 4 wheeler to keep it on the ground while it pulled it up. I'm going to paint a red circle in the center when I get ready to shoot at it. I've shot steel at 800 yards with my 308 but with a different scope. I'm hoping my new SWFA will make this a lot easier to do. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e300/supv26/A6D72E10-1126-4B9C-BD8A-4BE13DCD8B42_zpsqcpjzuev.jpg View Quote That looks great. I'd love to try shooting out that far. I don't know anywhere around here that goes out past 200 without driving a couple of hours. |
