The Americans in short action chamberings are on short action receivers. Unlike some of the other budget rifles which are all built on the same long action.

Given what you already have the .243 adds the most versatility.
The American 243s come with 1/9" twist barrels. Which will let you do ~100 grain bullets.
How far you can shoot depends more on what you want the bullet to do when it reaches the target.
Punching hole in paper or ringing steel, you can basically shoot as far as you can see.
The big limitation being how much elevation you can add to the optic.
