I have a chance to buy a 1927 LC Smith field grade shotgun. The receiver of this gun looks to be chrome plated. Would this be a refinished gun or is this correct?

You might poke around here:  L C Smith collectors association

So far as I know they were case hardened not chromed.  It could be it's been polished to a coin finish or just worn shiny.

I wonder if some sort of a nickel finish would be out of the questions? Back in the day it was nickel & not chrome that was the shiny finish. Chrome really didn't take off until the late 1960s, early 1970s, AFAIK.

My opinion is worth what I was paid for it....................

I have one that is a little older than that one. I'm no expert but I have kicked around looking to find out what I could on mine and I have never heard of one factory chromed.

After a closer inspection, I believe the finish is just worn off and is shiny. The break down lever has definitely been chromed at some point. Also the wood has been refinished. It is a nice old gun but I think the seller is asking to much for it.
