I usually don't like the laundry bag stencil, but I tried to wrinkle the bag during application and got some cool fluid patterns; I like it. It looks a little more natural IMO.

Will update as parts come in and get sprayed.

What colors did you use on the bolt gun?  Is that applied with a sponge technique?

@55Kingpin I bought 4 or 5 flat spray paints that closely matched the colors in my AO. Tans, browns, grays, greens. I sprayed the gun with the lightest color then applied the darker colors with small natural sponges. I then sprayed the whole thing with matte clear and then very lightly sanded it with 0000 steel wool. It's probably a whole lot more work than really necessary but I was happy with how well it blended in with the fall, winter colors. The matte coat really adds significant protection in my opinion.

@KTM300XCW  Thank you!  I'm gonna try that technique for sure.  The below rifle didn't turn out like I had hoped.  I think my contrast of tans/greens/browns was not enough...

The stock is factory "dipped" Multicam, and I did hand stencils for the rifle.  I just made it up.  Kinda tedious but the wife helped and she's a great artist.

Not technically a rattle can job below....

I Duracoated this rifle years ago with DD FDE and Leupold FDE, it's held up great.  I decided to try some of the GunSkins vinyl wraps.  I didn't take my time, so there's wrinkles and sloppy cuts, but it looks good enough for me and serves the purpose I wanted.

So I remembered that I had some stencils to try out.

Not crazy with how much of the rifle turned out, but this was my first test run.

This should work really well on anything with a mostly flat surface, like a PRI tube, sopmod or a2 stock, moe handguard. I have an AR pistol that needs to be repainted so I think it’s getting a full big luau treatment.

Decided to give it a try.  Tried some vegetation which seemed to work better on the stock.  Overall, I like it.

So what's the preferred brand? Rustoleum?

Curious, as I'll be painting a rifle for the first time this week.

Krylon, ulta flat camo.  It will get some sheen with use and oils but it will start out very flat.

Just let it wear.  Spray jobs should have some natural patina.

I tried both Krylon and Rustoleum...Aervoe is more durable. Better MIL color selection too.

Any particular tips? Dos and don'ts? Common mistakes?

Are you painting an already built rifle? Or the parts pre-assembly?

Don't forget your selector, and if you do and it's perfect don't worry about it. I almost fucked mine up trying to remedy that same problem and because of it, that area has more paint then the rest.

Light sprays from a little distance keeps it from running, and let it dry well before adding more coats.

I forgot to share, my rattle can was actually in the news. My brother and I went to a militia muster call (part of the ongoing VA rebellion against bullshit gun laws) and the camera guy wanted to get a shot of my back with the slung gun

For aesthetic reasons only,  I'd do some moderate disassembly (remove the selector, grip, mag release, and tape off the bolt release paddle and trigger) before you paint it. I think it looks better if they stay black. But that's just personal opinion. You won't hurt anything by just painting them.

I also straight up remove the trigger before painting. Out of habit I tape up the flash hider because most of mine are suppressor mounts.

I tape off the trigger and flash hider and on some rifles remove the the handguard/rail/FFT because I have a number of privilege tubes from Cola Warrior events.  Those have limited markings on them with peeps etc that make them kinda cool.

Decided to spray another one, but bought some multicam pattern stencils.  Got the base coat (khaki) sprayed.  Probably going to take about a week to complete due to stenciling & work schedule.  Was in a hurry and forgot to tape the trigger & 51T mount :

The best I've found is Valspar matte clear. Other matte clears still look shiny but you can lightly rub them with 0000 steel wool to dull them slightly.

Absolute best tips I can give you is clean the hell out of the surfaces you are going to paint. It makes all the difference between an shitty short lasting paint job and a quality long lasting job. I have used 2 methods. both work well. First is to liberally wipe everything down with 90% alcohol (not Jim Beam 😀). Second method is to hang it up and hose it down with brake cleaner until it's dripping. Both evaporate and leave a surface ready to receive paint. An ear plugs works great for sealing the muzzle. Blue painters tape for trigger, muzzle device (if suppressed) scope adjustment numbers/markings, and anything else you don't want paint on. Use very light coats and let each coat fully dry, like an hour. Drink a beer or some of that Jim Beam while you're waiting. When you are done spray lightly with a couple coats of matte clear being sure to let dry between coats, then sand very gently with 0000 wool. Last thing, let it cure a whole week before handling/shooting. Contrary to what others say, clear coat does wear and wear nicely, it will develop a nice patina as they say, but it also prevents chips from occuring. The key is a very light buffing with 0000 wool. Good luck!

ETA: Aervo paint is great if you can find it, but Rustoleum also works very well.
ETA2: laundry bag is good, but try to add other things to breakup the pattern like leaves, grasses, ferns, etc. I have even done entire guns by laying them down and covering them with sticks, leaves, bags, etc. and then moving those things around between coats. The closer you spray to the bag, leaf, etc. The more defined it will be. The further away you spray the more undefined/muted it becomes.
