Like they said, just start spraying. If you don't like it, go over it again with your base coat, and keep spraying till you do.
Got some goodies coming in for this rifle so gave it a touch up this morning.

I plan to try it, was not talking about wear as looking like shit. Im just saying my art skills are at about a kindergarten level and wanted tips so my paint job doesnt look terrible.

Get a cheap airsoft rifle to practice on first, see if you like what you come up with. Be warned, once you start the tendency is to keep going until you have no black rifles left.

This really is one of those things where you just gotta jump in with both feet and see what happens. IMHO, the only way your paint job will look shitty is if the colors clash and just look out-of-place. You cannot go wrong with tan and FDE. Forget trying to use green. Just use those two simple colors and make it as irregular as possible. I always start with tan first because you can't see the FDE against black too well. Once you have the base coat on, lay the mesh down and shoot some irregular patterns in over the whole gun but don't go crazy, because you need the contrast with the tan. After that, take the FDE again and shoo some solid color in and over some of the mesh FDE you just laid. Then, lay the mesh down over some of those solid areas of FDE and shoot some mesh tan, then lay some solid tan in so it's not all mesh. Just keep at it until you're satisfied. That's how I do all mine. |

Just refinished this beater in some Alumahyde earth brown I had sitting around. I stripped the old Aervoe off of everything first, though it didn't want to come off the barrel closer to the chamber...it was baked on there pretty good.

My 7.62x39, Kryptek stencil was acquired from a friend, the upper was already done when i obtained it. the paint doesn't match perfect yet, still trying to find what will? Used grey primer with a matte clear over coat.

How far do you all normally tear down the gun before painting? I am not looking forward to taking off the KMR-A rail.
I am going to give a shot with Krylon flat camo paint, maybe practice on an ammo can or some mags first. Thanks |

If I'm going to paint a pattern on it, I want it to be consistent. For practice I bought a cheap $20 airsoft gun at Walmart, and painted it probably 10 different times before I painted a my first gun. |

These were my two test mags today. I'm trying to pick colors that will blend in with green pine needles, dead pine needles and dead leaves. In the picture the mag on the left looks better but at a distance it looks just brown. I originally thought OD green would be too dark, but I think I want to try using the light green as the base color with OD and Brown over it. On the right, the green was sprayed through the net, I think the pattern isn't visible because its too close in color to the tan. Let me know what you guys think.

I paint one side of a thing at a time and twist the shit out of it on the other side to get tension and some crazy shapes, then i use a big clip to hold the twisty knot while i spray. I also go light with the darker color over the net (lighter color base) and then from an 12-24" distance after do some light dusting to add some darker effects around the dark net shapes. |

I ended up using lacrosse mesh on another test piece and I like the way it came out, but all I tried it with were tan and brown. |

If anyone is on the fence about painting your AR rest at ease. I have painted mine, and stripped it at least a dozen times, and never have harmed the original finish of the rifle, or accessories. I should add do not get strong chemicals on the lenses of optics or lights!
Painted: 
Stripped with Orange paint stripper: Just apply stripper, and let sit for a bit, then spray it off in the shower, or use the hose. There is still a little bit left, but I was too lazy to detail everything.
