I haven't done this before, so I figured I would give it a try.

The project:
My Rem 1187 that I recently got for my birthday

The camo:
Kryptek Highlander

Looks like a pretty cool pattern. Be sure to post up some pics after you do it. If I were you, I would practice on smaller, less expensive stuff first to get the technique down.

Have fun with it bud!

In, I want to see how well this works as a DIY thing.

I'm going to practice on a few things first.
I got the stuff from TWN. I didn't like the limited choices on the DIY kits you can buy for $100. Plus, I'd rather paint my gun with an HVLP prayer rather than the aerosol base coat paint that comes with the $100 kits.

In total, I spent $175 for the film, paint, hardener (for the paint), activator, and matte clear coat. The film was $40 for 1x3 meter strip. Thats all I need. Any more than 10 meters in length, you would have to pay for royalties or whatever.

I think I may paint the bolt, trigger guard, and trigger pins in Cerakote's Patriot Brown color.

How did the dipping turn out?  I love the kryptek leaf patterns and want to get some of mine dipped, but would love to see how it looks first.

I know its not water transfer quality but I got a pretty decent kryptek mandrake look on my rifle with krylon

I got the film and chemicals in yesterday, and my new spray gun today.

I'm hoping to put a base coat on some duck call barrels supplied from my dad (he makes game calls), and maybe a small otter box today

Tag for results, it is my dream to one day have everything I own dipped in kryptek

You need more activator.
Those breaks won't happen.
When it's ready, you can dip your finger into the corner of the film, pull it back up and it should sting out like a loogie for a couple of inches. Then you're GTG!

I am having a problem with the film not sticking. I am fairly sure I am putting enough activator on, and its eating my base coat.

Post some more pictures and I will try to help you troubleshoot.
I don't use TWN's basecoat, so I am not familiar with cure times and dip windows on it. Never been a fan of catalyzed basecoats.
When in doubt, more activator is your friend. It will make the paint soft on some brands so that could be what you are experiencing. If it is sliding off and looks like the pattern in a melted gooey mess oozing off your part, then it's too much. There is a fine line to walk.
What type of spray gun are you using for your activator? PSI? Tip size?
Water temp? Soak time?
Everything plays a factor in this stuff. it can be finicky till you get it nailed down.
I'm not an expert, but I have a little bit of experience with dipping. I'll try to help where I can.

It looks like the film is sliding on the base coat and making holes.
I am using a TCP global HVLP with a 1.4 tip at 5-10 psi on the activator.

I soak the film for 50-60 seconds and hit it with TWN activator. The water is around 90°F

Could be too much if you say it's sliding. Hard to tell without pics.
Also, TWN recommends cutting the 3502 activator with 30% Xylene on Kryptek patterns. Not sure if they told you that or not. It should slow down the reaction a bit and allow you to still get plenty of activator at the same time.

Everything you are doing sounds about right. The other factors are how fast your activator pass is and how far off the water you're holding the gun.
Faster & Higher = Less activator, more atomization
Slower & Lower = More activator, less atomization
Play with those and see if you can get any better results.

My tank is around 92 and I let it soak at minimum 60 seconds.
Activator application is going to be the main thing though. It will eventually come down to muscle memory from any successes.

Kryptek works...I didn't think it would in the woods, but it does when you hang it on a branch it blends in very well.  I started using it for my hunting pattern this archery season.  I dig Kryptek.

I'm still fine tuning my process. It's getting better. I'll post pics when the shotgun is finished.

You know, I'm not a huge fan of Kryptek for OCIE and apparel, I've gotta say, I do think it looks pretty good on a firearm - it looks a lot like the "classic" mesh-bag Krylon camouflage schemes, but cleaner and tighter.

You gonna do an AR next?

Glad you got it to work for you. There is a pretty steep learning curve with dipping but like anything else, practice makes the difference.
It's just a good thing you didn't blow through your whole accessory pack of film before ending up happy. Trust me I have been there!

Here is my M&P I recently did in Krytek Typhon.

Can you describe what issues you were having initially and what technique you learned to overcome them?  Thanks.

It was mostly activation. It was either too much or too little activator and I couldn't get the right ammount on the product.
I switched from TWN's 3502 activator to a different activator a friend had and it was a little but easier to get activation. It was still a difficult film, even for a guy I know that does this as a business.
