The sponge I used for the AR I had was a "synthetic sea sponge" from Walmart that ran about $3. It was in the face wash section, and I just cut it up into 4 pieces. I did a pistol recently that I got some diffrerent pieces of sponge from Michaels craft store, but I liked the Walmart deal better.

I use to buy the sponges in the paint section at Walmart but they quit selling them a few months ago. I will look in HBA for the sponge your talking about. Thanks for the info. |

I used alumahyde 2 this morning on my .338 win mag. Turned out great. Thanks for the idea. Very impressive technique. Best I've seen. I'll post pictures when it's done curing.

Thanks, OP!
The Refinishing Forum (like other Tech Forums) never cease to a amaze me (and I mean that). I have learned so much here from regular guys (and women!). I must admit, I have to find a 'test' gun in my collection and try my luck with refinishing it. I am not sure what pattern I want to try, but when I do I will post pics! It's forums like this on this board that makes my membership worthwhile. Thanks again. Be Safe. Joe |

Great job.
That really does look like ATACS. What colors did you use and in what order did you lay them down? |
|
|
Very cool I haven't tried to do sponge multicam yet. I also mix Rustoleum and Krylon because the Rustoleum has a wider choice of colors, to bad they dony make them all in flat.

Very cool, but those masks are freaking me out.

I layed down tan stripes, then brown stripes, then some od green small stripes with some spots. I then sponged the Tan, then the brown, and then the green, I then went back over and touched up with the Tan in certain spots to blend a little better.

I am bored so I decided to paint my beat up AMD-65. I am going to go with Krylon camo tan and OD green. Pic to follow later, maybe this weekend.

I have to ask this cuz I didn't see it asked in this thread...
I would love to paint my M4 the only problem is I'm kinda scared to do it.. For a one major reason, when it's painted and I'm going to clean it will the solvent wash away the paint? I have painted a few guns for fun my small .22 plinker, BB Gun, my 1Gaugege, and my Airsoft gun. They all came out great and look very clean I'm just wondering about the solvents? Thanks for your time... |
|
|
On the few RS guns I have done this on, I have yet to see an effect from the cleaners. Iguess it can also depend on the paints used, I use Krylon and Rustoleum Camo paints exclusively for this.

I just did a base of the tan and used a sponge for the green and then did a really mist with the tan again to give it a duller look. I may get some OD green Cera-Kote and touch it up. Looks good. I think some OD sponged stripes to break up the outline more would be perfect. |

Do you need to use a primer first or does the paint hold up nicely?
how long does the paint hold up for? |

I'm really imperssed. You guys are doing some bang up jobs!
I need to get some more guns to paint up soon. Sucky thing is that I have to wait until spring as I have to do it outside. I do have a supressed 22LR. SBR AR project that I am working on this winter and hope to have it ready for paint this spring. |

I don't baby my gun at all and it has signs of wear and drops and what not, but i kinda like it that way. My barrel got a little paint rubbed off last time out after around 200± down the barrel really quickly. I acidentally leaned it on a damp towel in the back of my truck and it smudged the paint but didn't take it off. doesn't distract from the camo though. I'm pretty impressed with it. |

Thats a pretty cool look that you put on those.

Forgive me if I missed it, but did anyone have to do any prep work on barrels or stocks before painting? After reading this, you guys did awesome jobs, I am ready to throw myself into it.
Thanks for taking my newbie question into consideration. |
