<=====================BEGIN MK III INFO==================> Upgrades on the MK III include a Stadiometric rangefinder, X/Y readouts, 5 reticles, a 60mm lens option and more. More details to follow very soon! |
|
The IR Hunter MK III includes all of the features on the MK II plus:
The IR Hunter MK III's stadiametric rangefinder uses a system of reticle lines with adjustable angular spacing to quickly and easily dial in on a target's distance. The MK III's stadiametric rangefinding system allows you to select your target's height or width then adjust a set of reticle bars to contain your target's height or width. The MK III will then give you a corresponding distance readout. Stadiametric rangefinding is widely used in long-range military sniping and is faster than laser range-finding techniques. Electronic laser rangefinders can also give away a shooters position, but a stadiametric rangefinding system is completely covert. The MK III is offered in a 60mm version which is 4.5X native optical magnification should be impressive. The MK III 60mm lens option will be available in our rental pool for those of you wanting to try before you buy. |

4.5X optical and up to 36X digital magnification would be handy on a precision rifle. Somebody needs to make a mount for a bolt action rifle.

View Quote This video also shows just how advantageous a dark night can be when you have thermal imaging on your side. I^2 would have never even detected this hog. He was laying down 10 yards inside the tree line on a dark night. Afterwards we went inside the woods and looked out to where we were standing when we shot him and it was pitch black. The hog knew we were there, but would of had a hard time seeing us. Thermal really is king when it comes to hog hunting! |

For those of you that did not read the AR15.com newsletter today - here is some good info and a special offer on the IR Hunter MK II/IR Patrol USB battery adapters that was featured in the newsletter. "We have access to a lot of products, and as a result we are constantly testing and changing our gear. Each time we go out there is a new piece or two that gets tested. Some stick around, but most are quickly discarded in a never-ending cycle of evolution. When it comes to hunting at night, our preferred weapon sights are currently the 35mm IR Defense Hunter MkII units. But like every other product, there is always room for improvement. With these thermal sights, the biggest problem is power. They are fueled by two or three CR123 batteries, and these don't last very long. In order to conserve power, we typically turn the weapon sights off when we're not using them, and then back on when we spot our game. And there-in lies the problem; every time we turn the unit back on, we need to calibrate and turn on our external video output. Then the unit will take a while to warm up and settle in. Because a typical set of batteries last ~2-5hours (even with extenders), overnight hunts will require a battery change or two. And while you want to maximize battery life, you don't want to risk losing power in the middle of a good group of pigs. So your options are to burn through batteries, changing them whenever possible, or to be very conservative with power, leaving the scope off most of the night (keep in mind we're using other thermals for spotting, like the IRD Patrol or vehicle mounted pan-tilt units). Until now that is." Read it all here - http://media.ar15.com/newsletter/1510/ |

Anybody seen one of these yet? More soon! Also, I tried out the image download software on the included Wafer USB drive that comes with the MK III and uploaded around 50 images for your viewing pleasure. You can find the IR Patrol downloaded images here.
And the much anticipated x/y readouts! |

Are flip up caps available for the eyepiece on the MKII 35mm?

I understand how the range finder works, what I'm curious on is once you determine range how does the scope handle dope or holdover? Is there a precision reticle with moa hash marks or some turret feature to dial corrections but yet return to zero?

Hot off the press from IRD! Here are the details on the IR Hunter upgrade program:
"We are pleased to formally announce our new IR Hunter upgrade program. Please see the attached flyer. The program is only for the IR Hunter MKII and MKIII systems at this time. We have not discussed any options for IR Patrol upgrades. Our commitment is to continue to develop innovative technology, bring the end consumer the best in class service and change the way the industry works. We are proud to be a company that brings new programs like our new "one of a kind” rebate program to the market. This program was developed to provide IRD customers the ultimate purchase security. Offering the ability to change models and features during their warranty period gives the customer no fear of buyer’s remorse. Look for more to come from IRD at the SHOT Show 2016." |

I spoke with a customer that recently ran the MK 3 and IR Patrol all night in 10F. This is the coldest it's been tested, and so far the USB batteries perform much better in cold weather vs CR123 batteries.

I've used the anker 9600mah without a full charge for a good solid 6hrs in 14-20deg temps. No problems whatsoever, never shut the patrol off. The battery pack for the patrol is a no brainer.

The x/y readout gives you repeatable zero. While not 100% necessary in a day optic, it is one of the important things people pay money to get.
|
|
so what happens to the used units that are traded in on the upgrade program? Are they refurbished and sold at a discount? Hopefully....
|
|
I am pretty sure they upgrade them and you get the same scope. It might have a larger germanium lense if you are upgrading to a larger lense, but it gets replaced.

No picture, but I bagged a fat doe at 5:30 PM with my new MK II 35 mm, on my DPMS GII .308 rifle. This weekend was the first time I hunted with it. Had the menu freeze issue once, not sure how I got into it, but batteries were nearly new when it happened, so that wasn't related. I am still learning, but I find that I keep it on menu 1 most of the time for quick zoom changes, and every now and then I go to #3 for a cal. Wish they had put brightness and contrast on the 2nd menu together. When the cold weather/pig killin' weather is over, I plan to send it in for the MKIII upgrade. I really need the multiple zero storage, and plan to record zeroes with/without suppressor.

These IR Hunter units are now available in our rental pool to try before you buy. As usual, the entire rental fee hoes towards the purchase price of a new unit.

So,
If there is an IR Hunter Mark III 35mm, I gather that having your IR Hunter Mark II 35mm upgraded is actually a firmware upgrade, which makes it a MK III? GB |
