I just bought and am finishing building a Kentucky rifle kit. The kit I have, and all pictures I can find of these style rifles, have a hook/nub towards the rear of the trigger guard brass. (example here: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5NQoojoqzI8/UzZIQKKWgcI/AAAAAAAAB_U/aYXiQL6eoKs/s1600/pennsylvania-rifle.jpg) When I shoulder the rifle, this hook ends up right between my ring finger and pinky. It seems that upon firing, this put a lot of recoil right into the side of the pinky finger. What was the point of this?

Fancy for the sake of fancy. You can try using a fowler style if that might work better.
