I took my dad shooting, Flintlock Musket edition

My Dad, 67, is a life long history buff, loves all the Revolutionary War, Civil War and western movies. The interest is there but he never got into the guns. His main interest, Sailboats
Not me, total gun lover everything from flintlocks to BRD for 30 yrs now. My 18yr old son is the same as me, anything with a trigger=want. Built his first AR at 12.

I decided Dad needed to come to my Cabin and do some shooting. We shot an IRAQ bringback DPMS I gave him (my spare) and taught him peep sights. Had him hitting an AR500 gong at 125yds after confirming zero. Then we did some pistol shooting with an M&P9 and a few clays with an 870 12ga, all firsts for him.
Then I got out the Musket. Navy Arms Replica 69 cal 1766 Charleville Flintlock Smoothbore. Filmed on my sons camera, not high res. 100gr of FFg and a .675 round ball. Kicks like a 28ga full weight gun.

Nice video, and a great looking gun. I am sure your father had a blast. There is something special about shooting the old/replica smooth bores.

About 10lbs. I think he just was not ready for it.
Very inexperienced shooter and was excited, did not listen to my "agressive forward stance! tight to the shoulder it is going to hit you" nagging.

Here is my son, all of 140lbs firing a similar full power load in my Brown Bess for comparison.

Go to this link and print it out for your father:  The Lone Marksman Revisited

Lt. Brank now has a statute of him in Greenville, KY.  http://www.tourgreenville.com/What_to_do_in_Kentucky.php

There's a blackpowder club that now does a Tim Murphy & Ephraim Brank shoot.  The Murphy shoot is from a rest and the target is 250 yards.  The Brank shoot is offhand and is from 300 yards.

My own research suggests that Brank fired from less than 300 yards.

4v50, thought you might like to hear his reply to reading that link.
Also, Were the caliber or specs of Branks rifle ever revealed?
Total history buff, just not a shooter.

Imagine the U.S. had Perry lost on Lake Erie, or Jackson at New Orleans.

Individuals such as these and that incredible marksman are what make us great.

Perry was beaten, because the commander of Niagara held back and did not join the battel.

Unlike a rational man, he
took his flag, rowed ,under fire, to Niagara and assumed command. Queen
Charlotte and HMS Detroit turned to face the undamaged ship and became
entangled. Perry sailed around them raking them both with broadsides. He
siezed victory from the jaws of defeat in fifteen minutes.

Jackson had no training at
all in the millitary. He organized the militia and was voted general. At
the battel of Horshoe bend he won a decisive victory against the Creek
indians.

Being one of our few victorious generals he was sent to New Orleans to defend it against  the British.

General Pakenham was in command of over 16000 of the world's best soldiers, fresh from the defeat of Napolean.

Jackson, with a few thousand
squirell hunters and volunteers, achieved a victory which any general
past, or present, would say was impossible. Perhaps the maksman and
others like him turned the tide for us.

Hooray for snipers!

Great Family Time.
Recoil did appear stout, however, BP 'pushes.'
Thanks for sharing.

He lifts his head off the stock in anticipation of the recoil.

I may have to get a camera that can do slomo for coaching my shooters.
