My dad gave me an M78 for my birthday, looks really clean and all numbers match expert there is a number on the right of the bolt when it's pulled out there has a different number.  Should this be the same number as the rest?  From what I'm seeing a lot of the metal has the same number as the serial number and the wood furniture has a different number but they match.  Serial number is 124201 if that matters

The bolt body should be serial numbered on bolt body left flat, very hard to see without removing bolt but you may be able to see it with the bolt closed looking down thru top of recvr if it is covered in gunk..

Handle and bolt parts will generally have a assembly # three digit or roman numeral .

Awesome thanks..... I believe where you're describing first I do see a "20..." so I'm assuming the 1 is under there.  Is there anything special that might make one worth more than another?  Being that you can't get ammo for it I'm not interested in keeping it but I'm trying to determine a fair asking price

Unfortunately It takes rimfire ammunition that hasn't been made in years, occasionally you can find some vintage ammo both mil surplus and Commercial but it is very old and unreliable.

You can convert it to centerfire. Centerfire 41 Swiss brass is available along with dies and proper bullets.

More info can be found on swissrifles.com  forums or Gunboards..

Upon further review it looks like I have a 1869/71 Vetterli not the M78, not being an expert with old rifles it's confusing trying to find an accurate price for the thing.... I'm seeing this model anywhere from $250 to $600, I would say this one looks about as good as I think they can get for it's age

Maybe my thread here could help with some history?

NOTE: the gun in my thread was a later conversion to 6.5 .   Looks like you're isn't converted to 6.5

Does the stock have the letters "AOI" stamped anywhere?

I found a good resource online that shows what all the markings mean... on the under side of my butt stock it has a SP below a + sign.... I'm seeing S+ but nothing with SP
