Know the 7.62x54 R is little bigger then  typical 308 bullets but some will shoot ok.

What is the proper bullet to use for reloading the 7.62x54R?,  will mostly be the 91/30 pu sniper rifle

Anyone have good source for  loads for this round?

No real proper bullet in the sense but if you want the best accuracy try the .311 dia Sierra 174 HPBT or the .312 Hornady 174 HPBT

Best bet is to slug your bore.

I have yet to try the Hornady in my Mosins or SVT, they have done well in my Type 99 and Enfields. As for the Sierra it has been very accurate in 54r, enough so that it will be a while before I try working up loads with other bullet combinations.

For what it is worth, I have used Varget and IMR 4895  for powder.  Great results and easy to find around my ao.

I took a $79.00 91/30 a few years ago, glass bed the action, free floated the barrel channel, and dremeled a little material off the trigger to make it a little lighter. From the outside, you CAN NOT tell I did ANYTHING to the rifle.

I then slugged the bore and decided to try the Hornady .312 bullets.

My average group at 100 yards was 1.05"

My best group at 100 yards was 0.85"

not bad for iron sights and one bum eye

The MN can be found in a few variations of bore dia., eg. .308, .311 etc.

slug the bore & take it from there

I use the Hornady 150 grain SP
http://www.hornady.com/store/303-Cal-.312-150-gr-SP/

The Hornday interlock SP or the Sierra flat based SP are my two choices for surplus rifles.  They are relatively cheap and I only shoot 100-300 yards with them so I don't need anything fancier.

I used the Hornady and 49 gr of H4895 if I remember right

The rifles have potential, most Mosin ammo just sucks to start with.  I do have some 1980's Czech that is pretty darn good, though

Yep, this.

I have one PU sniper that likes .308 bullets, and another that doesn't shoot well with anything less than .312's.  The only way to know for sure is to slug your bore.  All you need is a 30 caliber musket ball, a 1/4" wooden dowel, some grease, and a hammer.

a little touchup on the inletting, especially around the magazine seemed to make a world of difference with the one that I played with.  The action and magazine were bound tightly into the stock on the sides.  The magazine......floorplate....whatever....would rock front to back due to a rounded bottom.  This was twisting the stock even more.

I have pulled some bullets and loaded 308 tracer projectiles in some rounds . No problems , probably not the most accurate rounds but they work fine.

Slug your bore, my M44 slugs out to .314, but my ex PU sniper 91/30 slugs out to .311.
