M44

Yugo surplus

Min o' Barn at 100yds

Min o' Outhouse 50yds

I can usually do a 3" group at 50 and a 7 to 8 at 100.

That is unsupported standing.

I once put 3 shots from my 1931 Tula into 2 inches at 100y. Once I realized what I did I didn't shoot the other two rounds so I could go confirm it in person

No pics of it though, I should have.

1942 91/30 typical refurb I bought for $79.
Glass bed the action, lightened the trigger, free floated the barrel. It looks untouched on the outside. Best group with reloads was 0.85" three shots at 100 yards. My average group with it is 1.00-1.05" @ 100 yards

That has been my experience as well, M44 sucked so bad, I gave it away.

I don't keep my paper targets but here is a pic of a piece of scrap metal I shot. 10 round of herters ammo from Cabelas.

Shot at 75ish yard with a M27.

Shooting to the right but good enough for me.

My sniper shoots well - 1.5 inch group at 100 yards, for 4 of 5 shots, with one flyer, probably my fault for a lazy shot.

Main thing about the Mosin is the poor sights - the barrel mounted V notch, carried over to the SKS and AK series as well, just isn't very good.

Put a scope on one and they are a lot better.  The sniper versions were of course made/matched up better.

I had a Romanian M44 that I couldnt even get onto paper at 25 yards. All of my Russian Mosins (91-30, M38 and M44) have all been around 3-4 MOA. I had a Finn M39 that would shoot 1.5MOA.

Shot a golf ball at 75 yards hanging on a string and moving.

Booze may have been involved and I was considered lucky.

On my 43 tula(bedded and trigger tuned) I was able to get 1 3/4 inches to 2 inches with irons with the 148grain mid 70's soviet ammo... Got some of the 182 grain and 203 grain russian olympic match ammo and groups opened up to 3 to 3.5 inches(weird, though), switched to the 148grain sellier and bellot FMJ ammo... and groups shrank to 1.25 inches down to 1.05 inches... all of these were with irons at 100 yds

MOA all day challenge is over in GD fellas.  Just sayin'...

I took one of my 91/30 PU snipers out to run the challenge, and I averaged 1.88 MOA, that's for 5 groups of 5 shots each at 100 yards.

Too bad that performance landed me dead last in the precision category.

Any modifications to the PU? Or bone stock right out of Russian storage?

I shot one 1" 3 shot group @ 100 yards with my 1938 Soviet Tula 91/30 with irons shooting 80's model Hungarian LPS ammo. No proof other than my word. I quite shooting that day and haven't shot that 91/30 since.

91/30 was holding about 7-8 inch groups at 100 yards. Rear sight was crooked but rifle fired to point of aim well. M44 held 6-7 inches at 100 yards, even with the shorter barrel.

Both did better at 50 yards. Traded both for PSL, then sold PSL. PSL shot like the 91/30.

These 5 shot groups were from my 1944 Izhevsk PU Sniper. Using 1978 dated Russian silver tip surplus. 100yds.

Very cool to see what these old rifles can do stock or even slightly modified!

I know my rifle probably won't be a lot of guys cup of tea but the original stock had already been sanded ect when I got it.  Anyway here's my best groups and the rifle (old abomination) I shot them with.

Bigger group is a 100 yards 3 shot group around an inch. (off of a shooting table with no bipod)
The smaller group is from the first and only time shooting the rifle at 50 yards, it went 4 shots 1/2 inch or less. (off of a shooting table with bipod)

Another 100 yard 3 shot group that went around an inch.

Ammo for first two was Extra Match red box. PPU match for third group.
The rifle is a 1938 Izhevsk that I have customized in just about every way I would ever want to other than maybe a bedding job and a timney trigger.  I have also made sure that all modifications done to the rifle are 100% reversible.

1943 Ischevsk M91/30, box stock, shooting that brass berdan 1948 Albanian light ball = 2" 100 yard groups, sitting, using a pair of shooting sticks.

All my old surplus bolt actions shoot 2" 100 yard groups.  Which is fine with me.
