My second C&R purchase. I figured that since I had some ammo that was in a box I bought at a garage sale I might as well have something to shoot it with.
What's the consensus on the 53? I know it is not a true Mosin and will probably never be worth much more than the $100.00 that I paid but is the workmanship on par with the others? Anyone bought one of these from SOG? I took the hand pick option in the hopes of getting one in decent shape but how decent am I looking at? |
|
I have one that I bought in the early-mid 90's. It works just fine. It's as solid as any other Mosin out there.

Post pictures when you get it! Will do. Along with the M57 I promised pics of. |

Is that the same SOG thats in Houston Texas? Southern Ohio Gun. |

Type 53s are just as good or better compared to a Russian M44. They do tend to be in much rougher condition though.
|
|
That looks pretty typical for this batch of Type 53s. Should be a good shooter... and even at $119 still a pretty good deal for what it is.
|
|
That probably was hand pick of what they had left. They have been around a while, so Im sure they dont have a ton left. None of them were in excellent condition to begin with.

I will be satisfied with decent steel, good bore, and a stock in one piece.
I can always re-finish the stock. |

All numbers are matching. Metal is very good to excellent. Wood is beat up but solid. Bore looks great, action is smooth, and the trigger feels as good as any non-Finn Mosin. I think it's a better rifle than my 1944 M44, although the M44 does look nicer at a glance. Cross your fingers, I think you stand a good chance of getting what you want. -Jay |

I just got a "dealer" account set up on SOG, thinking about ordering another 53 I like the price. What do they charge for shipping?
|
|
Two I had in early 90's were junk. I would swallow no-go gauge.
Hopefully, they got better ones now. |

Also although not "true" mosins they are licensed copies and from what I understand tooled on the same Russian machines

I got one from SOG today. Lots of rust, dented sight hood, wood better than my other one, bore actually looks nice and shiny, receiver matching buttplate but thats it.
|
|
Got it today. Metal is in good shape bore is shiny and stock is beat up and dirty but not cracked. Action is very smooth. After disassembly I found a lot of old cosmoline under the wood so I cleaned it up. The only pitting is three pinhead sized spots on the top of the barrel. I think I will clean up the stock and see how she shoots.

Good deal sounds like I should have done hand pick! It is ten dollars well spent. I did the same when I ordered my M57. The thing lookes as if it had never been fired. Not a scratch on it. |
|
I ordered one today (24th) for the hell of it. I don't care if it looks like hell, just as long as it is sound.

I ordered one last Saturday. I am supposed to receive it tomorrow. If nothing else, I am impressed with how fast SOG shipped.

All the tooling for Type 53's (MN M44) and Type 56's (SKS) was Russian made initially, although the Chinese apparently cloned the tooling so they could make more than what the Russian made factory could turn out. Eventually the Russians got upset that the Chinese were copying their stuff beyond what the original agreements were to the point where apparently the Chinese were selling not just finished materials but even factories to the North Koreans and North Vietnamese. |

|
I picked one up locally here this week. I picked over four of them before I found one I liked. When I got it home, I checked the firing pin with the tool that came with my 91-30, and it was set way too deep. That is an easy fix though.
Accuracy was pretty much what I expected, but considering I was shooting in poor conditions (near 0F, windy, goofy range setup), I'm sure it is capable of tighter groups. |
|
Got mine from SOG when hey first got them. Paid ?160? And did the hand select. Stock was still in poor condition but the bore was very nice and the action smooth. Shoots well and was still worth the cash. If I hadn't blown my gun budget I might pick up a second with the price drop.

It is dated 1954.4 and has all matching serial numbers except for the bolt. As expected, there was no cleaning rod and the stock looked rough, although I didn't see any cracks. Bolt and trigger felt smooth. But I haven't had a chance to give it a thorough look though. ETA: Bore looks decent besided the cosmoline. Not much bluing. I haven't seen any rust yet, but i won't know for sure until I get the stock off. |

Damn AR15.com, you wore me down and I ordered one. Will give a report when I get it. Went for the hand pick.

I took apart the one I got last Friday (see a couple of posts up). It was from SOG with the handpick option. I still need to clean all the gunk on it, but I didn't see any rust at all.

Does any one know if the M91/30 stocks that aim surplus has would/could be fit for these? Obviously, I know the M91/30 is longer but besides the handguards would it be an easy fit?

I guess these came here through Albania like the type 56 SKS carbines that century arms got in a while back I think "Syrja" is common name there. On the butt stock of my 53, I found this when I got off the crap: http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff283/dcs12345/photobucket-14668-1360470086134_zpsce9ec4e2.jpg Someone over at Gunboards found an Albanian-language news article discussing the sale of a bunch of Type 53s to Century Arms International, so it's pretty much confirmed these are from Albania. |

Well, it will have an Albanian buddy then. I have a Sino-Soviet Type 56 that spent a little time in Albania on the way from Century. |
