Anyone know what model this would be? Looked like a '97 but I've never seen one with a rounded receiver. Saw it in a local pawnshop today and wasn't looking to buy-it was $500 and I just finished a 97 build from an inherited receiver. Long octagon barrel, straight grip. Bluing had all turned to brown patina but no pitting, wood was dinged but not cracked. Sent a friend of mine a text thinking he'd want it but it was gone by the time he got off work and made it in.

That shop is locally known for high prices but now I'm wondering-How good of a deal did I miss? Didn't ask if it was a model 1892 or 97.

Round top? Interesting.

I know of the model 56 and 57. but their receivers looked like the model 60's

Based on what I'm finding  on google, the early 1897 had a round top, and was marked "Marlin Safety Rifle" on the top of the receiver. When they came out with the peep sight they changed to flat top. It was definitely a late  1892 or an early 1897-as fast as it sold at that particular shop I'm really wishing I'd have looked at it closer. Looked surprisingly good even with nearly full brown patina-lots of age and honest wear but very little signs of abuse.

ETA-it was a long(24+") octagon barrel and tube loading. The 1891 and maybe early 1892 had a side loading gate, apparently even in .22. I'd love to see one of those.
