I have a 10/22 and a Henry .22, I am interested in a rimfire bolt action, why should I consider something chambered in 17 instead of 22lr?

Rifle will be scoped and used for plinking (mostly at 100m) and squirrel hunting.

I stumbled onto a new .17 HMR 20" barrel for a TC, I picked it up for low $$'s.  I have two Thompson Center Contender frames, with several centerfire barrel set-ups in different calibers.  I put an "old" fixed 4X Weaver on it, put it on the TC frame and put a TC rifle stock on it.  It is deadly on crows, squirrels, etc.  Very accurate, just don't try it on a bigger animal than you should.  Lotsa fun!

I like the cartridge because it is very accurate, has more oomph than 22lr, and is not too expensive to shoot.  The ammo is easier to find locally than the higher end target 22lr.

200 yard capable. Zero at 100 yrds and it only drop approximately 7 to 8 inches at 200. The squirrels will have nowhere to hide.

Make sure you headshot the squirrels. .17HMR makes a mess of small critters if hit in the body. .17 is my favorite round for gophers, makes them 'splode.

I have a CZ 452 Varmint and love it. It was $325 about 10 years ago.
