Ok,
So, I like quality and I'm not made of money.  I'm definitely in the "buy once cry once" camp.  This brings me to .22 rifles...specifically rifles getting close to $1k.  Now, for me once we start getting to that price range, the gun better be damned accurate.  It should also be reliable and built very well.  To me, the exotics are the Baikal/Izhmash/RWC Biathlon series rifles and the PWS Summit T3 (I've always been intrigued by the toggle actions).  Other than cool-factor, do any of these offer anything that a similarly priced Annie cannot?  Is the draw of these most likely because "variety/spice....."?  I would imagine parts availability with the Russkie rifle could be difficult, and the PWS not so much.  I don't necessarily want a "dedicated" target rifle, just a really nice "jack of all trades".  I have enough plinkers so a tricked out 10/22 need not apply.  So, in the $700-$1000 bolt gun category, which of the following would you choose and why?

PWS Summit for $678

RWC/Izh Baikal for $892

RWC/Izh Sobol (like Baikal with irons)

Anschutz 1416D HB for $799

Those are still off the shelf .22lrs. You want a true custom hand built .22lr Bolt gun. Look into a New Ultra Light Arms in WV. I have one of his rifles and it is amazing. He builds them to your specs.

Its the one laying flat..the one on sandbags is a ruger .223

Cost? I'd like to keep it under $1k.

If it were me, I'd go with an Anschutz. I regret selling the one I had, and it was low end for Anschutz (1451). It was freaky accurate, even with the sub par trigger. The quality of the steel and the finish was exceptional.

I'd probably pick the one with iron sights, but that's because I like things with iron sights.  The PWS doesn't seem all that enticing after reading about another member's issues with them.  I know that my CZ 452 trainer with it's long barrel is damn nice with its irons, so I would imagine that the Sobol would be, too.

If you're going to scope it, there's any number of offerings.  Maybe even a used Cooper, if you look hard enough.  Other than that, I'm not too knowledgable on toggle mechanisms.

Just a thought, looking at the PWS: That with a KIDD trigger would probably be amazing, since appears to take a stock pattern trigger housing. I built up a custom 10/22 years ago with every top notch part available at the time (steel receiver, re-machined bolt, etc.). It was very accurate, but I eventually sold it. The only thing I really missed was the KIDD trigger. It was by far one of the smoothest 2 stage triggers I've ever used. It's was worth every dime I paid for it.

I've only seen the one bad review on the Summit.  Everything else I've heard it very good.  I'm still on the fence over irons vs. optic (although my 43 year old eyes are leaning towards optic).

Volquartsen makes some nice 22's. I bought my Superlight for a grand. It's been reliable and extremely accurate.

If you shop around you can find excellent quality older match rifles for a reasonable price. I did not pay more than $390.00 for any of the below.

M70 Valmet.

Walther KKS-D

Vickers-Armstrong Empire

Soviet MU-12-2

Soviet CM-2

Soviet Taiga-2

Y'all are killing me.  If I"m looking at a heavy barreled repeater, how would the Mossberg 144 LSB compare to a 513T?

Anschutz 1423 maybe?

Or a KKJ or Anschütz 1420 and 1422 if you don't like fullstocked rifles.

No love for a Kidd setup?  You couldn't get out of there just under your 1k mark and it is a damn good rig!

I was seriously considering one of these. Only read positive things about them (except for people complaining it's a $900 .22), and actual price is lower than listed on the site.

CZ 455 Precision Trainer

I just bought a PWS T3 and love this little thing.  I haven't shot it for precision accuracy yet, but I'm pretty sure it's there.  I really wanted a bolt type rifle to shoot suppressed and like the 10/22 commonality of the T3.  I will shoot some premium ammo through it soon and see what it can do.  I just have a Leupold Rifleman 3-9x on it for now.  I wanted something light on it, but that I can shoot jackrabbits and prairiedogs out to 100-150 yards or so.

Might consider a Sako Finnfire (P94S).  There are 3 on gunbroker now.  They'll probably end up selling for a bit over $1000.

If you buy Anschutz, get a used one, as current Anschutz is backing the idiotic and unreliable so-called "smart gun" tech:

OP, Look at the Buckmark Carbines. They are much higher quality than your typical 10-22, have nice wood, and are accurate as all get out.

Most people don't know what they are when you pull them out at the range.
