Been away from shotguns for awhile. Mainly AR's and bolt rifles. Time to upgrade my 12 gauge pump. What is out there in a semi auto configuration and takes a nice big drum? Not rich so cannot afford a $2000 shotgun. This will be pure SHTF/ defend the home shot gun that will supplement my AR's. The bolts are for 1000 yards plus if needed. Appreciate any suggestions.

VEPR 12 for $699 and 25 round drum is $99

Love mine. Flawless with federal multipurpose bulk pack

I've got a Saiga. The 25 round drum is so bulky, it's distracting and difficult to reach around to get a grip on the forend.  I'd just stay with 10-round stick mags.

Is the saiga worth the cost?

How about Century Arms Catamount Fury II? The cheapest of them all from what I see so far.

Saigas are pricey now, but they are neat.

I have a few 20 round drums from MD Arms.

I like them a lot.  (S12 and drums)

Get one. It's perfect for nothing, but awesome for everything.

I have a Siaga SBS with a 14in barrel that up to 150 yards I like more than my MP-5.

This is the break in to make sure it runs, two cases of 7 1/2 shot and a 8 man SEAL team on our sporting clays range
.

This was what it looked like before breaking which it never missed a beat with 10 round mags. (it has a streamlight weapons light on the left side of the forearm)
.

They are GREAT shotguns with a little fine tuning.

Vepr12. Current prices are around $700-$750. Built heavier than the Saiga. Easier mag changes than the Saiga (Saiga mags need to be rocked in like an AK). No need to "convert" the Vepr if you don't want it in a "sporting" configuration.

Akbuilder.com has an adapter for the Vepr 12 and Saiga 12 to use Winchester/Mossberg chokes. I use a Vepr in 3-gun and the adapter opens up more choke options and I already have a Mossberg.

SRM 1216 has a four tube revolving mag that sits horizontally.  It is semi auto and holds 16 rounds of 2 3/4" or 3" magnums.  It is completely ambidextrous with a long picatinny top rail for optics or irons.  After you fire four rounds the bolt locks back.  You just rotate the mag tubes one place and the gun chambers the next round automatically.  Fire the next four rounds and rotate the mag tube again for another four rounds.  Four tubes with four rounds each.  When the tubes run dry you hit a button and drop them.  If you have a spare set of tubes on your belt you can reload in about two seconds for another 16 rounds.  I have seen a guy shoot 16 rounds and reload firing another 16 rounds faster then an equal competitor can shoot 9 from a Benelli and reload and shoot another 9.

Leaving the weapon long, Vepr 12 is probably my first recommendation. The magwell and LRBHO are nice. For a radically short SBS (sub-12"), Saiga 12 is still king.
