Okay, I'm sorry but I hate the safety on the 870.
Its behind my finger, I so I easily miss it.
What are my options, other then selling the 870 and getting a 500?

..... In before the "I've never had a problem with the 870's safety."

I don't think you'll find a lot of people defending the OEM safety. Upgrading to an oversize version is a pretty popular mod. I use this one from S&J Hardware: http://sjhardware.com/store/modules.php?name=catalog&file=product_info&cPath=107_177&products_id=314

They ought to come from the factory with something like this installed. You can easily flick off the safety even while indexing your trigger finger over the trigger guard. Go for it, I'd say it's a no-brainer.

I put the Vang Comp on mine years ago and never looked back.

It protrudes far enough that even with gloves on you still have no difficulty taking it off.

I have had the Vang and S&J jumbo safety.  I prefer the flattened top of the S&J as I did not inadvertently hit it as much.

Is the vang comp safety made out of a metal? I'm just wondering if I could buy a vang and if it sticks out to far I could grind it a little.

Yes it is, both are quality, I just favor the S&J.

I tried a Wilson Combat and went back to the OEM because it is flush with the trigger guard when it is off. For me it is important that there is no way to mistake the condition. It performed fine at a 3 day class I took last year so I am sticking with it.

That said, I know I am in the minority on the OEM safety.
