I have an 870 special purpose with a 30" barrel and a 3.5" chamber. Can I buy an 18" 2.75 barrel and have it fit the same receiver? I'm looking to sbs this shotgun and it would be a damn shame to chop the 30" barrel up. Search turned up no results on this question so any input would be helpful.

I have your answer for you. A standard 870 barrel will fit your 3.5 super mag receiver and function perfectly. My best friend has done exactly that. Of course make sure you never shoot 3.5 inch shells out of it with the shorter chamber.
