I will be getting a +1 extension for my 590A1 soon and am looking for the best way to remove the mag spring retainer without damaging the edge of the mag tube. I removed it once in the past and almost damaged the end threads. Will I need to use the retainer when I use the extension and what is the best method to remove the retainer without damaging it or the mag tube? Thanks in advance for the help.

Careful use of a small flathead screwdriver.

Or, you know, the right tool.  Snap ring pliers.

You will not use the retainer when adding a mag tube extension

I just used a flathead screwdriver and gently pried it up until I could get at it with needle nose pliers. I then placed it in the trashcan.
