Found this and was wondering if it could be used in a single shot .410.

The ammo is near the bottom of the page.

The ad says "For the British Enfield Muskets..."  I believe the
Enfield .410 had a shorter, 2.5" chamber. I've heard of people
converting those Enfields to use modern .410 by lengthening
the chamber, so I assume they're otherwise dimensionally the
same, or at least close enough to work. I can't think of any other
reason why those shells shouldn't work in other .410s. Kind of the
same concept as using 2.75" or 3" shells in a 3.5"-chambered 12-gauge.

That's just what comes to me off the top of my head. There could be
some other factor of which I'm not aware, but I hope this helps a little.

This ammo may not chamber in all .410 shotguns, as it was designed for use in SMLE rifles that have been rebored into single shot muskets.

To make production easy and to make finding ammo more difficult for anyone who might steal one of the muskets, the British used standard .303 brass to form the shell by skipping the neck forming step used to complete .303 ammunition. So these cartridges would be 2.25" shells, as well as having both a larger rim (.540" instead of the .410's .528") and larger base diameter (.460" instead of .450").

They would be safe pressure wise, as they were loaded fairly lightly to prevent colonial prison guards, police or thieves from being able to outgun the military or British forces who had .303s.

Maybe I'll order some and see if they fit.

After further research I don't think I'm going to get any. It seems the ammo has a flat lip on the case head. Regular 410 has a taper. Dan emailed me back and said it had hard military primers and didn't recommend using it in a regular shotgun.

I bought a case, and I don't have a .410 SMLE. Now I'm looking for one.

Hey, I thought it was a good excuse to buy another Enfield.

Yes, Springfield Sporters, that is where I purchased mine for $70 back in the '90s.

Two 180 "cases" on the way from Dan's. One to open and play with, the other to keep sealed and add structural support to my ammo fort.

I've wanted one of those muskets as they are just interesting and cool now there is ammo. Think I'll get a couple cases next paycheck.
