Has anyone seen one of these? I've been looking for a new 1911. This has the features I want. Colt's answer to the TRP? Web page says :An upgraded Duty Ready pistol based on the Colt Rail Gun

Saw one at collectors in Houston. Looked nice, but they were pretty busy so I didn't get a chance to fondle it.
|
|
I fucking hate California. I want one of these so goddamn badly.
This does seem to be the Colt answer to the TRP, and I'd buy this long before I bought a TRP. |
|
Almost right...needs carbon steel and no series 80 parts.
Downgraded to sort of want.... |
|
|
Where did they get the name Cobat? I really like the frame cut colt does behind the trigger guard, and almost have the balls to try and do that to a SA RO compact.
|
|
It's supposed to be Colt ComBat Unit. I'll be buying one in 9mm, for shits and grins. And I swear, I can't believe how many people still think Series 80 is bad. I own both, and I can only notice the barely discernible difference between them, and only if I concentrate. Range shooting, and more importantly defensive shooting, you'll NEVER notice the difference. Also note that this has the dual recoil spring; should be very soft shooting. 25lpi front strap checkering is far more comfortable than the TRP's 20lpi, and still just as grippy. When I buy mine, I'll send a MSH mag well to Evolution to have Ionbonded the same color, with the same 25lpi checkering. |

Magwells are fucking stupid because you can't use flush fit mags effectively if need be. Series 80 is one of the things that make me prefer it over the Springfield gun. Only thing I'd change is stainless steel, and needs a flat bottom firing pin stop. |

I don't see it as a big deal. That's a nice looking gun. Isn't it basically kind of like an M45 for civvies? Without the crappy finish? Or maybe that is a series 70. I don't really know. |
|
For that price id get a Dan Wesson.....unless I missed the details, I bet the internals are MIM....hope I'm wrong on that....Colt's, while nice, aren't as nice as the price they command...id pick one up if I found a deal. Just for shits and giggles.
In short, better options in this price range. |
|
Curious as to how it would fit in my current holsters. The pic rail is beefier.

Again IIRC, when the new design came out for the USMC, the reason it's beefed up is due to the dual recoil spring and issues they were having with the standard girth dust cover. |

Colt transitioned to the beefier rail recently for all production and it does make getting holsters a bit harder. When I was still living in New York I went to Ritchie gun leather and had him make me one using my gun as his pattern ( mine was one of the usmc models) and all rail guns including the m45a1 are series 80. Mine has been flawless in performance.

I can tell the series 80 from a 70 in about half a second. There is a noticeable spring feel to the series 80 I will stick with the series 70 and be happy. Also a trigger job cost more on a series 80 and you have to fine someone that actually know how to correctly tune one. Once a series 80 is correctly tuned it is hard to tell them apart if done correctly. But even the custom shop Colts have a less then stellar trigger from the factory IMO DW however has all had excellent triggers right out of the box as well as overall better fit and finish and small parts used.. Just my opinion and experiences with many different 1911s..

DW 1911's are no question better fit and finished than production colts or production springfields. Along with no MIM parts they are my first pick out of the three if I were in the market for a production 1911. Springfield second due to the options offered on their non railed TRP. I have also found Springfields to be a tighter fit gun compared to all the colts I've handled. This is not to say Colt doesn't make a quality 1911 and it's not to say I'd never own one. Just think they're a bit much for what they are and offer in a package. Any of the three will suit you well. |

I was recently trying to decide between the Colt Combat Unit or the Springfield TRP Operator (full rail). Found both at a local shop and actually wanted to like the Colt more... nope. The Colt slide fit was really loose and rattled when I shook it in my hand. Plus series 80, no thanks. The slide fit on the TRP on the other hand was phenomenal, no play whatsoever. I came home with the TRP.

Probably nothing more than the TRP being greased, and the Colt being dry. Even my SCG rattled, until I simply greased the slide rails. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I came home with the TRP. Ah, no. That Colt was LOOSE. The TRP on the other hand, even when dry is really tight. This is not my first 1911... I know the difference and how they feel (have / had Springfield, Colts, Les Baer, and Dan Wesson). The Colt Wiley Clapp Gov't they had in the case next to it was even worse, and I wanted to like that one too. Oh well. Now if you smeared a ton of heavy grease in there you could probably get it to a point where it wouldn't rattle audibly. That doesn't change the fit of the pistol. Some might also argue loose slide fit makes it more reliable. To me it is more indicative of how much care was put into making it. |
|
A two piece full length guide rod can also make a slide seem tighter than it really is. I've seen guns that didn't rattle until you swapped the FLGR to a GI system. If you're concerned about slide play, you will want to rock the slide up and down and side to side while in battery to see how much clearance is really there.

My Special Combat Government rattled when dry, but as soon as I put a light coat of grease on the rails, it disappeared. And that pistol is laser accurate. |

I came home with the TRP. Colt hater? LOL... I just bought a Colt SAA about a month ago. Could have bought three or four Ruger new vaqueros or Ubertis for the same price, but I had to have that pretty little pony on the side. Probably my most coveted firearm, my late grandpa's US Army 1911A1, is a Colt. I was issued and trusted my life to a Colt in Iraq. Blah blah etc etc... I am hardly a Colt hater. If all other things are equal, I would always rather buy the Colt over a competing brand. In the case of the CCU and the TRP that I handled, all other things were NOT equal. If that hurts Colt fanboy feelings then too bad. |

If that hurts Colt fanboy feelings then too bad. Some people look down on others who don't agree with them on their brand of choice. LaRue fans come to mind as an example of this. I too was issued Colt and I bought Colt. My personal Colt ARs have been great rifles. My Colt 1911s, not so much. I have landed squarely in the Springfield Armory camp due to my consistently extraordinary experience with the ones I own. I would love to have another Colt join my 99 years old 1911, but each one I have handled had some glaring flaw that should not have been there. |

A good beveled mag well is good enough, honestly. Also, I don't know of any mag well that also has a lanyard loop. I could be wrong about that, but I don't think I've seen one. |

Also, thanks for the link. I'd never seen those. You're getting super defensive over something I wasn't really being aggressive about. My opinion is that speed chute mag wells add weight and length to an already heavy and big gun, and do nothing other than making mag changes with certain mags more difficult. |
