I'm looking to pick up my 3rd 1911. The first was a Kimber that was nothing but problems. The second was a SA lightweight champion operator, that was a nice gun but I sold it when I needed cash awhile back... So here I am.
I know I want a rail, I want 5" and I want Colt or SA. The new black Operator looks awesome, until I saw that I was looking at the LW operator. I like that colt is 100% made in USA, but Springfield has a great reputation... Help! |
Springfield is also Made in America now, no longer any ties to Imbel.
I'm not a colt fanboy, but I am a SA fanboy, so I would say the Loaded Operator. Truthfully, you couldn't go wrong with either. |
The Colt is a series 80, meaning it has a firing pin safety. I like having it, I've seen the aftermath of a dropped 1911 firing with the thumb safety engaged. The added safety adds a bit to the trigger pull, not enough for me to notice, but some people don't like it. I believe the SA is a series 70, meaning no firing pin safety. Other than that there's not much difference other than real men carry Colts.
I would go with the SA Operator. I'm in love with the black finish/stainless barrel combo.
I've got a couple of Springfields, and a Colt Rail Gun. Colt has the NAME, but the fit and finish actually are better on my Springfields. So I would go with the Springfield if I were you.
I switched over to SA from Colt two years ago.
Never looked back. |
I like Colt, because glued-in ejectors and SAI rollmarks turn me off a bit and I like the horsey and the history, and the all Colt US-made aspect. That said, they aren't the paragon of quality. The newer ones are best they've made since the '80s though IMO. |

Longtime Colt fan here. Having owned more than a couple of Colts over the years, I finally got around to buying a Springfield (Champion Operator). I honestly don't know what took me so long. Dollar for dollar, I believe that you get more from the Springfield than you will from the Colt. The historical name of the Colt was always a big selling point for me, but I have reached a point where I expect to see features added as expense increases.
Aside from Colt Springfield is one of the older names in the 1911 world and they have always represented value for your dollar. You won't go wrong with either of them, but if your money is as hard to come by as mine is... The Springfield is a winner. |
I have owned my Colt 1911 for 43 years. My dad gave it to me. I love Colt. I would buy none of the Colts I have seen over the last two years. Sharp edges, safeties that could not be used with one thumb, triggers that were so heavy, emptying a magazine would be considered a "set" if weightlifting was involved, etc.. Every one of them would have incurred extra expense to make them useable, and frankly, Springfield gives more than useable quality right out of the box. I am not rich, money counts for me. Springfield gave me great pistols for nothing more than the cost of the pistol.
As a man who has owned many Colts and Springields, my experience couldn't be further than the post above mine. I wouldn't feel undergunned with either brand, but my experience leads me to Colt. I wouldn't turn down a good deal on a Springer, but they just aren't the same.

I have both, and you can't go wrong with either. I have a slight personal preference for Colt.

Yeah damn that's sexy.
I'm going lightweight operator. I liked the Champion and the full size gets outstanding reviews. Also I read the operators are made in America so that's a big plus for me |

I think SA is series 70 and Colt is series 80. I like SA because series 70 is easier to take apart.
And I would go with SA since their CS has been great to me. |
I've owned Colt and Springfield 1911's. I'd go with Colt, but Springfield isn't a bad choice.

Springfield is better at putting guns on shelves at stores, but Colt makes the better weapon out of better steel.
The Colt Rail Guns are well made, well fit and shoot great. I prefer Heinie's ledge's over Novak's and replacing the plastic MSH with a quality metal one, but this would be replaced on the Springfield because of the nanny-state lock. |

View Quote Last I heard Colt used SAE 4140 steel, and I would imagine Springfield uses the same, or very similar, 4100 series CrMo steel as well. Pretty standard, especially for forged guns. The Chinese Norinco M1911s were 5100 series (Chinese equivalent anyway) which is a higher grade of steel.. a fairly uncommon thing for a forged gun to not be 4100-series. |

Nice piece btw. |

Springer Operator - Owned Colt guns before and the SAs are well priced.

View Quote If I were in charge of Colt, I would offer more in their series 70 lineup besides just their basic A1 style and the limited runs distributer versions like the wiley clapp. I have never had a problem with the FPS, but I would rather not have one, and if they offered pistols like the XSE or Rail Gun built on a '70 as well as '80 it would greatly benefit them. |

Both outstanding guns. SA 1911s have always impressed me. Plus I don't feel bad when I modify them
Me? I'd go Colt just because I'm a fanboy |

American colt, not Asian Springfield or whatever they outsource them from this month

Springfield Operator get my vote. I own MC Operator for several years and still love it. Springfield now offer all balck Loaded Operator with magwell and G10 grips.
