| Been out of the 1911 scene for a while and recently picked up another one. Need to stockpile some mags but wonder what are the best mags out there today? I have quite a few Wilson 47Ds laying around still and years ago when I bought them I heard they were the best. Now, not so much. Poll coming. |

The ones that work best in your pistol.
I suggest you try out a couple of whichever magazines you decide to buy before you load up on them in quantity. That being said; I prefer the 8 round CMC Power Mags because my pistol prefers them for properly feeding hollow point as well as FMJ ammunition. |

As long as they work I guess,plus they're called "Cobras"...that's a cool sounding name.

I just picked up 2 Wilson 47TBs today, to go with the 4 Checkmates my Sig came with. They were a cast iron bitch to load, but worked fine hand cycled. Hoping to get to the range with 'em tomorrow to see how they do. Parkerized I use the 8-rounders that came with my Taurus, plus the ACT-MAG and MEC-GAR of the same style. I have bright blue, matte blue, Parkerized and bright nickel. They all have the 'stair step' bent nickel follower, which by the way is trapped in the body and can't slip forward and scratch aluminum frames and it can't tilt. Counting the original two made by Taurus, every one of these I have proofed so far ran flawlessly right off the bat. The finger rest base plate covers the small extension of the mag outside the grip frame and I like the finger rest feel. I also have a bunch of Colt factory 7-rounders marked with a Rampant Colt, Colt .45 AUTO, with a 'C' in the corner for 'Checkmate Industries'. The few of these I proofed worked fine. The Taurus is my only shooter 1911 right now. All my Colts and US Mil have the correct/original mags with them, 2 in each case. 
Like Junior Johnson may have said, 'It ain't no hot rod, but it didn't exactly come from the factory like this'

dammitt.
i ordered 10 0f:8R-45-RG. i thought maybe, just maybe, i should double check. the last time i thought this and didn't i bounced the house payment check so this is:oh, what the hell! you can have four if you want or can pass; my fuck up. if i like these i may get 10 of the 10Rs. LMK. they ship priority($12.50); not too bad; they charge TX tax  .

| i bought 2 black 8rd chips for 40 bucks and they work great, i bought 1 stainless 8rd chip and it works great, i bought 2 wilson 47d and they work great, and the 2 factory 7 rounders that came with my springer work great, ive loaded them all up and shot them all full and havent had 1 failure out of any of them :) |

My 8 round cobramags are all flawless but several of my 10 rounders have major issues feeding the first 3 rounds out of the mag in just about any 1911. I guess the spring tension is too much or something because they will simply not let go of the round. Ive only got 3 of the 10 rounders that im actually pleased with. |

If you go to 1911 Forum or M1911 Pistols forum there are numerous threads on this. M1911 has quite a following for the Checkmate magazines with the hybrid feedlips.
Many do not like the Wilson because the follower is all polymer and will with time wear and not lock the slide back. Tripp Cobra Mags solved that problem with their hybrid follower; metal & plastic. 
Tripp also makes the Flexfollower that is "no-tilt" and all metal. Checkmate's follower is like this only coated in black Teflon and with the dimple. (see above) 
Some on those forums feel the springs prematurely weaken with the Wilson mags. Tripp has some of the strongest mag springs around. Chrome silicon and ever so slightly larger wire diameter. Wolff offers what is referred to by those buying and using the Checkmate magazines a an 11# spring. These can be specified when order Checkmate mags directly from the factory. Thanks to these links in this thread, I've learned the following:
My new SIG 1911 came with two 8rd mags. These are the Checkmate SS removable floorpate hybrid lip magazine. CM458SRBEXT My new Colt Gold Cup came with 1 7rd mag and 1 8rd mag. Per the instructions, the 7rd mag is for wadcutters and the 8rd is for everything else. Oddly enough, the 7rd mag appears to have the hybrid lips and the 8rd mag the wadcutter lips. The 7rd mag appears to be the Checkmate CM45-7-S-H magazine and the 8rd mag is the Checkmate CM45-8-S-H. |

To those with bad luck with Wilson 47s have you have had this type of malfunction:
Upon firing the last round of the magazine, instead of getting ejected the spent case gets stuck back in the magazine vertically, base wedged in the feedlips with a big indention in the case mouth facing up? |

My mags are Chip McCormick Power Mags. Strong springs, feed great, good prices. I still voted "Other" for Tripps, though. the weak springs in the Wilsons led to peening on my slide from them just barely (and eventually not) engaging the slide stop. Stronger springs/upgrade w/ Tripp internals fixed this, but unfortunately I let it go to long before noticing and diagnosing. |
