Both handguns are sitting at my LGS taunting me to buy them and take them home. I have looked over both enough to know that I definitely want them but only have enough money for one.

The S&W R8 is a great revolver with 8 rds of .357 magnum, The only other revolver I have is a S&W model 10 for my wife. Great gun, but I want something in .357 and having 8 rds of it is even better. I like the grips and the size and weight is just what I want.

I have wanted a SA TRP since I first saw one in 2009 or 2010. I don't have a 1911 right now but have have a few ( Kimber, RIA ) and kind of miss having one. The TRP fits my hand just as well as the R8, but there is just something that I cant explain about having it in my hand.

Please vote and explain your choice.

I don't care for the R8.  N frame 357s are cool, but I don't need the rails and prefer the 6rd cyl. Also, I refuse to buy a handgun with an ignition switch.

eta:  the TRP is a nice piece.  I've passed on a couple and was sorry I did

R8 is much more unique than the TRP

Coworker bought an R8 last month.  Had to send it back to S&W already due to a loose barrel shroud.

TRP; I'm done with new S&W's. Not surprised someone posted they had to send one back Their QC has gone to hell.

Here's mine and I LOVE it.

TRP; because 627PC is bestest 357 x 8

I already have a DW Specialist so that takes care of a 1911 and the 8 shot 357 is on my hit list.

I like the 627 or V comp better but the r8 is ok too.

I do not want a shrouded barrel though and if i get a new S&W it will only be a performance center gun.

Why not just get a stainless 5"627? No stupid rail, more durable finish, looks alot better, and besides all that, mine shoots awesome.Moon clips with 38 short colts are about as much fun as you can have with a revolver.

R8

It's unusual, and I am inexplicably drawn toward strange .357 Magnums.  Since I started reloading, I also consider how hard a firearms is on fired brass, so the revolvers have been getting a lot more range time.

ETA:  There will be more 1911's for sale for decades to come.  Nobody knows how many more R8's will be built.

Both are cool guns, but I think the 1911 is more practical though. I shoot my 1911's way more often than I shoot my revolvers.

Definitely the R8.  Much more versatile than the silly 1911.  Not to mention MOONCLIPS RULE!

TRP

Rational, cost of ammunition, and comfort of shooting it all day.

TRP.  I won't own any Smith with a lock or 2 piece barrel.

this ones easy

5k+ rounds and not a single issue.

most of that was Tula.

as I said, easy choice.

I would have said the R8 except for the alloy frame on a .357 magnum.

I love my 627 but I''ll pass on the R8. That means I would go TRP in your choice.

Even though I initially voted the revolver, I'm thinking you are right Fin... My Springer "Loaded" 1911... that I've all but turned into a semi-custom wanna beTRP really is the king home defense, range, and woods carry for me. It's sitting atop a kitchen shelf set up as a dedicated .45Super at the moment. I too have K's of rounds thru her without ever a fail due to the pistol.

And now that S&W is using the 2 piece barrels I'd most certainly pass on the revolver you speak of OP...

While I much prefer an old school k. Frame, between the two I would go r 8. The high end sa's are great guns but even with high end 1911's I have inexplicable chokes now and then. I pretty much can shoot a revolver faster and more accurate than any auto ( yes I am old and was raised on wheel guns) except for reloads although living in a state with a 10 round max capacity law, the r8 is pretty much on par with an auto.

I want to vote for the revolver but I'm kinda on the fence about the R8. I guess I just can't get past that rail.

It just wants to be a pro.....

But seriously your suppressed TRP is cooler.

Because my TRP Operator is sexy and heavy in a good way and a damn tack driver.

Revolver is cooler.
I'm leery of the quality of newer Smith revolvers, though.

1911 is more practical.
Although, if I were buying a full size 1911, I would want one with a rail, and IIRC, the TRP doesn't have one, though I'm not intimately familiar with Springfield's offerings.I also am a fan of 9mm for "practical" guns, although I do carry my 1911 fairly often due to how easy it carries. The thin width is nice, as you will find when you carry it.

I could go either way, it depends on what you want out of the gun. I would lean towards the 1911.

The Trp is offered in railed and non railed versions. I have both and can't see myself getting rid of them. I do wish the railed version came with a regular rear sight though.

The 8rd is nice for revolver matches and competitions but is kind of spendy for general shooting . The monster cylinder is so heavy the trigger is somewhat less than say a 686 or 686+(7 shot)

The 686 is cheaper and more available
