Been reloading a lot of 9mm and 40 over the last year and have a good supply of 45 brass from back when I had a Kimber 45 and some being picked up every range trip.  I think this is more of a got all this stuff to make some cheap ammo so I want to buy a gun in that caliber to shoot it deals.  Looked today for something cheap in 45 and found a used g21 for 450 but kindof want another 1911.  Lgs had the Remington 1911 $50 off and then there was a $75 rebate tag on the gun too.  Would come out to $605 after everything from my calculations.  Thought about finding a rock island base model and just use it as a beater to blast with for fun.  Most likely its gonna be a range fun/beater/cheap 45.  What do you guys suggest?

I'd say go for the 1911. Glocks have their place but for you can't really beat a 1911 for a 45 range gun. It'll be a better time at the range than the glock.

I don't think I would let the $150  difference determine what you shoot. Get what you want .

I'm a fan of the Glock and the G21 in particular, but if I had only one 45, it would be a 1911.

Are you going to keep the gun after you shoot through your stock of components?  If so I'd tend to favor a 1911, but the Glock isn't far behind.

If you're planning on dumping the gun after you shoot through your stock of components I'd favor the Glock. I think it'd be easier to sell the Glock than a 1911, but I may be wrong.

Buy a Springer Mil-spec for $550 or less. I just bought one for $525. Good solid gun and for 300 bucks for small parts it can be a great gun. I added the following.

Drop in FCG from C&S, drop in BT grip safety, Flat MSH with internals to eliminate the ILS, Tac safety and faux checkering for the front strap. $303 shipped.

Nothing that can't be used or taken off when it finally goes to Alchemy for the works.

Another vote for a 1911. Way more fun to shoot IMO than a Glock

Here you go: SAR K2 45 ($397)

$450 for a used g21 sounds high. Since you can get a new gen 3 for $480 or a used Gen 2.5 for $375

Thanks guys I like the idea of the springer or something around that price range.  What ever I get I do plan on keeping.  The only reason I got rid of my last 1911 is it sat in the safe for 2 years as I shoot/carry glocks mostly.

Spoil yourself and pick up an HK USP Tactical 45.

Then buy a can.

I'd go try some various ones at the range, my Springfield loaded is a great shooter and I prefer it to the glock. But current favorite is my fnx45 tactical. Without the the tmr and suppressor it was a great shooter. With the rmr, it needs the can but I love shooting it like that too. To just waste off .45 tho, my AO thompson 1927a1 is a blast. Can't recall ever hating a .45 I've shot come to think of it.

Since you are used to Glocks; I would go with a Glock. I like the 1911 and have several. But now you can customize Glocks just as much. So you can now pour cubic yards of cash into your Glock project guns just as much as a 1911.

My G21 is more reliable than the 1911 when in 460 Rowland. And I did not have to weld on another rail on the G21.

I've owned a G21 most of my adult life, they are a great gun.  I did get an STI Elektra .45acp a few years ago and it is an absolutely amazing gun and I LOVE it.  That said, here's what I would say...if you want a low cost, fun gun "beater" the Glock is the perfect choice.  It's extremely reliable, even in harsh environments, can take a ton of abuse with no ill effects and will still shoot very accurately.  The only way I'd go with the 1911 is if you were willing to spend significantly more and get a higher end 1911.

Not "cheap" but the Sti trojan is sweet. Or the range master with a full dust cover and bull barrel.

M1917 or model 22.

If you could only find one cheap.

From a pure utility perspective, I recommend the Glock.

From a "I just want to have a .45 range toy" perspective, I recommend the 1911.

If you're patient, you can find a S&W 4506 in the $450 range.

I just went through a similar dilemma. I'm a die hard Glock guy and have no plans to replace my G19/G26 for carry, but lately I've had a desire for a 1911 that I couldn't shake.

Knowing that the 1911 I buy will only be for range use, I thought why not try a "budget" gun. After reading reviews all weekend I finally ordered this yesterday.

Just my opinion:

Rock Island for a cheap 1911.
S&W 3rd Gen 45xx series for a cheap, highly reliable 45.
Big fan of Glocks in 9mm, not so much of their 45's.

Just for an update to this thread I purchased a Remington R1 Enhanced this weekend, drove straight to my range and put about 50 rounds through it.  Went home after and cleaned it to get all the factory slime out of it and ordered 500 bullets and dies to get some reloads ready.
