I am a fairly experienced shooter and am looking for a compact .40.

I just got rid of a Glock 33 (.357 sig) cause I could not shoot it worth a flip.  I have no problem with the glock platform, but I shoot the bigger glocks better than the small ones. I had a 19 years ago before I was a descent shooter and had trouble with it too.

I have Glock 42 and XDS 9mm now.  Looking for a high cap compact 40.  My choice is between

Glock 27/23   ---multiple ways to tune the trigger
XDM Compact 40 ----- PRP
XD Compact 40   -----PRP
M&P40 Compact   -----APEX
any other recommendations

Whatever I get I want to tune the trigger to below 5# and I value a short definite reset.  I can let rounds off pretty fast and accurate at 5 - 10 yards with a full size grip.  In the store the MP trigger seemed the most crisp, but the heaviest.  I could tell no real difference between XD and XDM, but the XDM holds more rounds.
M&Pc feels the best in the hand, but I know that rarely equates to actual shooting.

DOOOHHHH  I forgot to put glock in the poll......is there a way to edit the poll???

I owned an M&Pc & XDM.
I put an an apex kit in the M&P compact , and it made the trigger similar to what the stock XDm trigger is right out of the box.

Accuracy was not close , my xdm 3.8 was far more accurate. I buy all factory ammo.

The main gripe most people on here say about XDm is the grip safety, I have shot 1911 for years and never had any issue with any grip safety.

Another vote for the xdm if you buy soon , they have a free mag promo 3 free mags

23/27. Don't have the XDMc but if their triggers are anything like its bigger brothers', it leaves a lot to be desired.

Inexplicably, M&Pc is almost as large as the 23. Hard to categorize that as a compact. Good shooter tho.

I've given the nod mostly to the 27 this year. Now that the cold is settling in, that will likely change. Gloves and 27 sized frame doesn't make a good combination.

Actually, I would recommend that you follow ARF tradition and get both. Not to be cheeky, but because they compliment each other so well and yet have very little functional overlap IMO.

I'm assuming you mean the XD40 Subcompact model, I'm voting for that one as I run that one from time to time.  It's a good, solid pistol, built like a damn tank, heavy dual recoil RSA.  It's a bit heavier than the Glock 27, but that will also help tamp down on the recoil as well.  It's not that the Glock 27 is a bad gun, it isn't, but I've generally found that people really don't enjoy shooting it and it find's it's way on the EE more often than other models. The trigger on the XD40SC is a bit mushy, but you're already looking at a PRP to fix that.  I like mine the way it is, it's also a very, very accurate pistol for what it's worth, easily on par with my HKs.

G27, second choice would be M&P40C, third choice G23.  Have  all of those, carry the G27.

Gotta put in another vote for the G23/G27 combination, edge to G27 for additional concealment and alternative carry options (ankle, pocket, etc.).

Of these the M&P Compact IF you get the APEX trigger kit.  The XDS if you want it out of the box.  I won a firearms training company, all of my instructors are either Military vets or off duty cops.  Here is what they actually carry.
1. Ex military, ex CIA, current Detective Sergeant survivor of 4+ gunfights that I know of. Glock 23 as primary, Glock 27 as back up,Hammerless J Frame as ankle gun. .
2. Ex military A F Security female, S&W MP 40 compact with complete APEX  trigger as primary carry, Shield 40 as backup.
3. Ex military, current Bank armored car security, Glock 23 as primary, Glock 27 as backup, Glock 42 on leg.
4. EX military female, S&W Compact9 with Jerry Miculek trigger rebuild, Springfield XDS9
5. Retired Army senior Marksmanship instructor, current owner of GFT, HK P2K9 with trigger job by Bill Springfield, Shield 9 with complete trigger rebuild by APEX, DB9 with magazine rebuild in ankle holster.

Glock 27 is my choice.  I have paired mine with a 22 instead of the 23 though.  Allows you several carry options and support gear.

XD .40 Subcompact.

Sometimes I get equal or better groupings with my XD subcompact than a full size pistol. Weird but cool.

I just picked up an M&P Shield 40 that is very comfortable to carry. Even more  so than my Ruger LCR and way better than the XD 40 subcompact or the XD 45 compact. Thin, light weight and can still have 8 rounds loaded.

I've fired an XD40 Compact.  The recoil sucked.  So I assume that an M&P would be better since they were designed for 40.

I prefer my P229 in 40cal.

But I'm a TDA man.

I would choose the M&P C 40

I`d rather have a Full size M&P 40 because it has less recoil

I already have an XDS 9.  It is the "wifes" gun.  I wanted something bigger for myself for winter and for the car.  Since I got rid of my glock 33 its been just me and the lonely Glock 42 in the car.  He needs a big step sibling.

It's a bad ass little pistol for sure with great ergo's, conceal-ability, shoot-ability(low recoil), and accuracy. That said, I've carried an M&P40c for the last 4-5 years nearly everyday. It came with a great 5-6lb smooth trigger out of the box. My M&P40 (mid-size) trigger sucked and needed the Apex works which I quickly installed the (Apex comp sear, USB, RAM, (and reworked the trigger bar for a shorter reset) to get what is arguably the best trigger available in a polymer. Its my HD weapon with a TLR-1 attached. But my M&P40c had such a nice trigger out of the box I never f-ed with it. I still have a RAM in my parts bin I haven't installed in it yet because the reset is good too. Maybe mine is an anomaly, but I don't know... Feels, shoots, and conceals better than that bastard brick of a G27 I carried for 5 years previously.

Glock 23 and/ or 27 with night sights.
Hydra-Shok 180, Gold Dot 180, Golden Saber 165, have less snap than hotter Ranger T 165 or Gold Dot 155
