You need a "conversion" barrel, like this:
http://www.brownells.com/handgun-parts/barrel-parts/barrels/springfield-xdm-conversion-barrels-prod42403.aspx and then 9mm mags. What sort of upgrades are you looking for? Don't know anybody local, but Springer Precision Powder River Precision and XDMan all do good work, or at least that what I've heard through the Interwebs...

Thank you for the info! I'm just looking at some trigger work and maybe new sights. The 40 was my first 'real' handgun, so I want to keep it but I prefer to shoot 9mm.

Wow, the new storm lake barrel shoots great!! I shot some IMI and it functioned great, but also shot some freedom remanufactured and had some short stroking and failure to lock back after last round. Not a big deal but may look into an actual 9mm recoil spring for it. Over all very happy, and if I want to shoot 40 again it only takes about a minute to change back! Thanks again for the info!
