Picked up a pristine S&W Model 31-1 at a great price. Now what the hell am I going to do with it?

Any thoughts on this beautiful gun?

Shoot it frequently! If you shoot it a lot even ( reloading is the way to go for affordable 32 ammo ) and take care not to clean it much ( cleaning wears finish off much more than shooting.
If you decide to keep long term they make great trail/ woods guns
Nice plinking revolver with cheap ( if you reload !) ammo
Hint- some ( not all -dimensions vary some)  of these revolvers will chamber shoot and extract 32 acp ( auto) ammo with its semi rimmed case design

Life is too short to keep that gun in a box or locked up in a safe!
If that gun was mine I'd shoot and enjoy it.

I'm thinking of putting the 31-1 towards a .38 Special or .357 Magnum.

I have another S&W .32 Long revolver, albeit refinished.

I always thought the 30-1 and the similar 31-1 were sleeper guns. The 4" is a very uncommon length and would be a wonderful lady's gun.

Is that built on the "I" frame?

The 31-1 is a J Frame. The 1903, I believe, is an I Frame.

I am definitely on the fence with this gun. I can't really say that I am collector of older and/or rare guns, with my Dad's duty guns...a late '50s/early '60s S&W Model 10 and two pre-'72 Colt Detective Specials...being the exception. On top of that, she's not in one of "my calibers." I'm a cop and a firearms instructor, and I really like to shoot what I have. I'd be much better served with something that I'm going to shoot- something along the lines of another Model 10 or a Model 19- and this 31-1 would most likely be better off in the safe of one who would truly appreciate it.

One thing is for sure: prices are all over the place!

Without looking it up, sometime around 1960 the 30 and 31 got the dash 1 which is a Jframe. The no dash veriations are an i frame.  Many believe the -1 models are capable of some heavily loaded 32 S&w loads mimicking 32 h&r mag.

It is one that does appear to be all over the place. I may be wrong, but i think I have watched one bring over $600 on gunbroker. There are collectors for that piece and handloaders really like the -1 variations.

Prices have been going up steady for all of the older Smiths and Colts . If you throw it on the big auction sight you may be surprised .. Do you have the tools as well ?
