Hey all,

My brother's birthday is coming up, and I'm wanting to get him either a Ruger GP100 or S&W 686+. This will be his first gun of any kind, and he has expressed a lot of interest in revolvers, especially these two. My go to online store is Buds, which lists the 4" GP100 (Black) for $569, the 4" GP100 (Stainless) for $614, and the 686+ for $715. I have no perception on revolver prices, so I'm wondering if there are any other shops that have better prices on these revolvers. Thanks for y'all's help in advance.

I've skipped right over buds, and bought my last 3 guns from GrabaGun

To answer the question you didn't ask---The Ruger is a good solid gun but revolver shooting is all about the trigger and the 686 is the way to go.

With a spring kit or a bit of work by a gunsmith the Ruger can be every bit as good as the S&W but if you put the springs or the work into the S&W you will have something
way better than the Ruger can hope to be

When considering  a .357, the only considerations should be which S&W model should you go with. Ruger should not even be in the equation.  And yes, I own several including a pre-lock 686+ and a 386+ Mountain Lite.  Get a 4" barreled 686+, he should be able to shoot it for life!

Gotta love the forums....op asked about price shopping and here come a bunch of opinions on why one is better than the other. I wonder why I even bother reading on here anymore

I just paid $690 for a 686 plus 6" with talo grips from buds. Best price I could find after a week or two of looking.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Haha I wasn't really looking for a comparison between the two, but I appreciate the comments nonetheless. For me, I don't think I can go wrong with either of these. Solid reviews and track records for both. I wouldn't doubt if either of these revolvers outlived us. I guess it comes down to how much I love my brother...I think I'll go GP100 .

Might be worth your while to check out the local classifieds, I have seen clean GPs around here for as low as $425(those don't last long though) most of the time they are closer to $475-500.
