My 21st is in june and I have decided to save up for a .357 revolver, I have narrowed it down to three choices; a Colt trooper mark III, a smith and wession model 19, or a ruger varquaro (the older model, not the new varquaro). I am leaning toward the colt, mainly because it's the closest I can get to owning a colt python at the moment. But I have never owned a revolver before, I have owned a few 1911's though. the reason for these three, is the price. they can be found for $800 or less in used condition. I am looking for a shooter, not a display gun. which of the three would y'all go for, and why?

I went for the model 19. Twice.

I forgot to mention, If I get a model 19 or colt trooper, I want one with a 6 inch barrel, and the ruger would be a 5.5.

don't forget a 4in - A 4in model 19 just looks right.

I prefer the look of the 6 inch barrel, but to each his own, and nice model 19.

Considered a N frame? The will eat .357s all day. Model 19 is not as heavily framed as the mod 27/28

I have though about one, but they are a little too big for what I want.

I had not even thought about the 586, I might get one of those. My local gun store has them for $700 brand new, I will have to go check them out.

More love here for the L-frames, whether 586, 581, 686 or 681 (not sure if they still make all four versions..?) The K-frame 19 is a great gun, but the slightly larger L-frame is closer to the Trooper in size and will tolerate heavy amounts of use for a longer time; likely several lifetimes. It's also softer-shooting than the K-frames with equivalent ammo.

Personally I like the 4"; I've had L-frames in both 4" and 6", and with the heavy underlug the 4" balances better to me personally. But as you say, to each his own, it's a subjective, personal thing at that point.

I dig a N frame with a 6in barrel. Just looks right.

It depends on you planned uses.   If you are going to shoot a lot of heavy loads, the Vaquero will hold up best.   If most of your shooting is going to be with light loads at the range then the M19 would be best.   The Mark III Colt is not like a Python.   Way different action.

You might want to think about an L frame or a Blackhawk with adjustable sights if you want to shoot a lot of 357 Magnum loads.

I know the trooper is diffrent form the python, but I said it's as close as I can get without spending over $1000. But I think I have decided A blued smith and wession 586 with a 6 inch barrel.

I think a 586 would be a really good idea.

I just inherited a 1965 Model 19 from my stepfather and I got to shoot it yesterday.  I only shot .38's in it though.  But man, it was so much fun.

Your possible choices are wildly different and all good.  My dad had a trooper and it was fine.  I have had a bunch of smiths and like them the best.  The Vaquero I don't know about but the Rugers I have had have all been stout.  I suggest to shoot .38 specials for enjoyment.  The .357 has its uses but short range informal target isn't really one of them.  The exception being a 125 gr .357.  For some reason those shoot unbelievably fast.  Point, pull and before the mind can follow you will see the bullet impact.  Startling how fast they are.  The Ruger would be a very good hunting sidearm.  Consider the four inch.  Very handy.
