A coworker has a 1903 Colt Pocket Hammer (not Hammerless) pistol in near perfect condition.  Her father fired one magazine worth of ammo and put it away.  James D Julia's valued it at between $4000 to $7000 at auction.

Not to threadjack, but what's up with the forcing cone on that one..? Looks like it's either got eighty thousand rounds of lead buildup, or else has been rebuilt using PC-7...

These things do exist. We used to visit my grandmother every summer, and one year she asked my dad if he wanted 'the gun' upstairs. In the bottom drawer of one of the dressers there was a pre-war Colt box - a nearly new Detective Special and a single box of .38 special. 5 rounds missing from the box of ammo. Apparently my grandfather got it to carry while flying CAP missions during the war but never got past those 5 rounds, and never carried it at all. Serial number dates it to 1929 which is kind of odd, but I guess someone had new old stock to sell in the early 1940's.

I agree.. they are out there... but finding one you can afford to buy, that perfect, is hard. I've been at this for 22 years, and thats my first one. I would LOVE to get a few more old colts.. a 1903 would be amazing..

I agree.. thats some magic wax paper!

Even I would buy and cherish that thing at that price.

I'm curious what the "no cockers" who seek out that sort of thing would pay for it at auction though.  A grand sounds...cheap.

Good find!

Awesome revolver!   And nice pics of the other Colts, as well.  Great thread.  Love seeing those older guns in such fine condition.

I think you are lucky. If it had drag marks, I would be much more likely to fire it. Without drag marks, there is no way I would ever fire it or even open the cylinder.
That is one rare bird.

I wont lie.. I wonder myself... Its not one of the more popular models like a SAA or similar, but I am willing to bet it would get a decent price if in the right white glove auction.

Colt is missing the bus.. can you imagine if they reintroduced these now as a vintage line (kind of like how they currently handle the colt saa).

I would be first in line. I love the pocket hammerless..

When you consider what dealers are asking for used VG Detective Specials and Troopers, seems like a very good deal.

Next step is to get a letter from colt and start tracking the history on it.

Not sure what to say?, other than stunning!  This revolver is the exact opposite of my 1910 Colt Police Positive, which is "shooter grade" chipped stocks and "traces of remaining bluing" LOL.
I'd love to find a Colt Official Police someday, but something I could shoot and not feel bad about.  Your Official Police is just stunning to say the least.

I learned the hard way not to detail strip this pistol. Took a lot of cursing to get it back together.

1939 Colt Official Police. It still is pulling duty as a house gun....

The above is a 1903 Colt .38 ACP. It's been in my family since New. Pics are from shooting it last year. Over 100 years old and still runs like a top. This particular gun has some history too. Long story short, there was a sexual assault on a young girl and this gun settled the accounts of the men responsible. That kind of family history makes it an even more important item to be passed to the next generation.

nice gun but that price seems like alot...   I won't tell you the price of one I passed on 18 years or so ago, it sold as I was literally scanning the table for other deals.  But it was mint with box and when I told people the price a few years later, everyone yawned as being no big deal.

But if you shoot it, it will lose a lot of value...
