I'll take the LCR.

I've had this 638 for over a decade, and it gets more than half of my daily carry load.  I love the gun, but if I had to choose today, I would probably go Ruger because I don't believe in built in locks.  I am seriously considering getting it converted to moon clips.

I am also wrestling with this decision.  I have had a Ruger LCR in 357 for several years and it has done an excellent job as pocket carry gun.  However, recently I have taken an interest in appendix carry and I preferh an exposed hammer.  Had a chance to handle both the Ruger LCRX and the S&W 638 today.  The Smith feels far more solid and has a seemingly slimmer profile, the Ruger feels a bit cheap but has a superior trigger and grip.  Will end up carrying this both appendix and in the pocket, I do feel as though the hammer of the Ruger may be an issue when pocket carrying.  Not sure which to pick at this point

Now I'm a Huge S&W fan boy of JKL frames

But if it was 3inch GP100 or 686 3inch. I would have picked the ruger

Jframe any model I would take over the LCR.

Went to the gunshow

Found a brand new 642

$400 cash, same as buds, but I could look it over, and check it out.

Also came with black grips

...or happy mothers day LOL

Nice snub
Does it sport a lock?

I bought my 6th  J fame a  M642-2 in 5-2012 and it sports the dreaded lock.   So far Its been 100% at the range.

BTW

I trust it and use it as my BUG.

Yeah, that's more like a Model 36 or 636 Smith. The 638 doesn't have a full hammer, just a little nub that barely protrudes out of a humpback frame.

I have a S&W 638. If I had it to do over again, I MIGHT buy the Ruger instead . . . at the very least, I'm impressed by the Ruger, but I like being able to manually cock the 638.

There's an LCR with an exposed hammer now.

I went with a S&W 442 Pro.  Nothing against the LCR just like the S&W more.  Its cut for moonclips and does not have the hammer lock.  I have been on a S&W Moonclip revolver kick.  Hunt with a 10mm Auto S&W 610 6.5".  I started shooting the 610 in USPSA Revolver division but picked up a  S&W 625 5" 45 ACP revolver about three years ago.  The rules changed February of this year allowing 7 and 8 shot revolvers in Revolver division so I now have an 8-shot S&W 627 Performance Center 5" in 357 Mag.  Took it to my First USPSA Nationals earlier this month.

I rented a LCR .38 special last Sunday. I'd been eyeing this gun for months. Loved it. Fun shooting. Put 50 rounds through it and then went back for another box of ammo. I went home and got one off Gunbroker. My range didn't have one one for sale without the laser. It's.delivered to my range/LGS. I'm just waiting on the phone call saying I can pick it up. :D.

I've shot Smith snubbies before. Love the looks, but they hurt badly to shoot. I have carpal tunnel. The LCR I rented had LaserMax grips,  so I think mine will be even better to shoot with the stock Hogue grips.

I shot very well with the LCR. I was not with Smith snubbies. My usual EDC is a 9mm, but I can see carrying my LCR.

using the right grip or right Jframe is the key

I suggest  the heavier M640 in 357magnum  with 3finger S&W revised combat grip. and shooting 38spl or 38spl +P .

I got rid of the 2 finger grip on my M642 and used a revised 3 finger combat grip. It made my revolver softer to shoot.

I  suffer from arthritis   and hate recoil .   I even  hate the recoil of the 147gr loads in my P30S 9mm.

I got some HOGUE TAMER grips
small enough to still fit in my nemisis front pocket rig, but big enough to get a grip on, it's designed to cushion recoil, and had a non-rubber plastic bottom, so it slide out of your pocket easy

I really like it

S&W because you can sell it easier and for pretty much near what you paid for it.
