So, I have acquired an old, well used Ruger MK II.  The previous owner apparently left out the firing pin stop and rebound spring and proceeded to fire the pistol resulting in the telltale 'damage above the chamber'  (more detail here from others afflicted with this problem).  My damage (pics below) seems to be more severe so I'm not sure swagging out the bumps will alleviate my problem, but I will try that first.  When that does't work I'll buy a new barrel.

My problem is I can't seem to find a barrel that isn't "match grade" or "custom".  I just want a simple tapered barrel, just like I have.  Used would be fine too, as this will be for my kids to plink with.  Is there a company/site that sells used barrels?  Do I just have to go to a gun show and get lucky, or post on the EE?  What do all those people do with their old barrels when they upgrade to the "custom match grade stainless bull barrel"?

Just call Ruger and they'll either fix it for free or pretty damn inexpensive.  It is IMO the least expensive and stressless way to do it.  They usually have around a two week turnaround depending on the gun/parts.

Last I heard the barrels were damn near impossible to get out of the upper, so it boils down to big gunsmith bill, buying a new upper half (serial part) or sending it to Ruger.  I can't quote for veracity, but I was told years ago that the barrels are screwed in to proper alignment and then crush/press fit from there.  So without some serious gunsmith time, they are perm. attached.  I've never seen one removed, so my info might be wrong.

Thanks, I'll do that, I guess I just realized that the 'upper receiver' is the serialized part, so that is what defines the firearm.

FYE, I looked up the seriel number and it is an 18-1XXXX meaning it was probably one of the first runs in 1982...

or you just buy a chamber reamer from brownells and recut the chamber yourself...
