I'm trying to avoid buying a holster over $40. I really just want something that will safely carry my gun at the range. As a result, I don't feel that a Raven holster or the like is necessary.

Is there anything inherently wrong with your basic nylon OWB holsters (e.g., Blackhawk) for my purposes?

Check out alien gear holsters. It's right there near $40, but they are damn good value.

What gun exactly?

Is this a gun you intend to carry, ever? If so, invest in a quality holster and use it at the range. If not, a cheap nylon holster would probably work, but I'd suggest spending a bit more for a Safariland 6378, if they make one to fit. It'll give you the option of belt loops or paddle, durable, simple, and the ALS system will keep it from falling out or being grabbed by someone else.

I just got an Uncle Mikes "Kydex" paddle for my G17 and have been absolutely pleased with it, $18 on amazon prime! If you need retention my highest recommendation would be a Safariland 7Ts

VP9. Yes, I know--I paid that much and now I want to cheap out on a holster. But it just seems kind of silly to invest in a $100 holster for plinking. Incidentally, I carry a Crossbreed for my EDC.

ETA: perhaps I'll just spring for a Raven Phantom. I hate to pay that much--the markup has got to be astronomical--but I suppose it'll last forever, no?

Plenty of used raven holsters and quality 'raven-like' holsters out there that will serve you well - check EE frequently.

DSG Arms makes a great OWB kydex holster for a pretty reasonable price ($70ish).

They're a great company to do business with, and they're a site sponsor too.

A G-Code paddle holster will do what you want in your price range.

for a range plinker (and very limited options for a holster for the VP9) get a universal large auto nylon hip holster and call it good.  $10-12 at Dunhams or Wally World

I have a nylon pancake holster like this I took the thumb break off that I conceal a Makarov with.  For $10 shipped, try it out
$10 pancake holster for large autos

Raven has the advantage of carrying a good resale value should you want to get rid of it as well, if you buy a used one you probably won't loose anything on it.

Check out KT Mech Holsters.  They make a good product and you can get their Gunfighter Holster starting at $40.95.  I have an Akela Duty holster and have been happy with it.

You don't need a pancake style concealment holster such as a Raven etc. for the range.

Fobus makes an OWB that will fir the VP9.

For a cheap range holster there's nothing wrong with a Fobus or Uncle Mike's. I prefer the Uncle Mike's kydex ones.

I know these holsters have caught flack before, but if you're just standing and walking around the range, a Blackhawk Serpa might be just the ticket at around $30.

The injection molded Uncle Mike's served me well for many years as a hostler for competition, the  range and general OWB carry.  I would stay away from the nylon ones in general, not just Uncle Mike's.

I would snag this one in the EE.  Damn nice holsters.  (No it's not mine)
