Surprising results.

That's surprising since velocity wasn't even that low for a 3 inch barrel. I read somewhere that the 124gr gold dot was the only bullet they didn't have to alter for the short barrel version. I assume the powders are different though. Thanks for posting

My pleasure. Thanks for watching.

Those are the EXACT same results I achieved doing the exact same tests. The Speer Gold dot 124+P and the  short barrel load performed very poorly through 4 layers of denim and gel. The best and most consistent performance I achieved with a G43 and a Shield was using Federal HST 124 standard pressure. They penetrated  to 18- 18 1/2" and expanded an average of .620 25 out of 25 times. The Corbon DPX 115+P (Corbon DPX 115 +P penetrated 16" with beautiful expansion of .685") also performed well as did the Underwood Xtreme defender 90gr +P (penetrated to 17 1/2" but of course did not expand)

Awesome. Thanks for posting.

That's awful, especially from a round that they're marketing specifically for short barrels.

Thanks for the video, OP.

I really enjoy your videos bluefalcon and in the video you asked if there was any ammo Ventura Ammunition carried we'd be interested in seeing tested.

I'm retired LEO and in the 80's & 90's my Agency issued S&W 9 MM pistols, 39-2 then 439 and last 5904/6904.  Our issue ammo was Federal 9BP LE +P+ 115 grain JHP or Winchester +P+ 115 grain JHP Q4174.  My agency had good results with this ammo and it even proved effective out of Tactical Teams 10.5" Colt sub guns.

I'm still old school and like the 9 MM 115 grain FMJ for practice and 115 grain JHP for CC carry.  Ventura stocks Federal 9BP +P+ 115 grain JHP and Speer 115 grain +P+ Gold Dot.   Ventura also stocks standard pressure 9 MM 115 grain Gold Dots plus a couple other brands.   I currently carry a Glock 43 and back in the 90's carried a S&W 3913.

I wish you would test some of the 115 grain offerings in short barrels.  I place more value on shot placement and adequate penetration first over bullet caliber and expansion.   I know the heavier bullets tend to find favor today but the Winchester white box 115 grain JHP is still on the market as is the Federal 115 grain JHP.

I'm curious to see if the 115 grain JHP are prone to under penetrate in short barreled pistols like the S&W Shield, Glock 43 or  Kahr.  I'm curious if the +P+ 9 MM ammo provides a significant increase in velocity compared to the standard pressure 115 grain JHP and +P 9 MM 115 grain JHP.   In a short barrel does the +P+ 9 MM impede controllability enough to hinder it's usefulness compared to standard pressure or +P?   Is there enough increase in velocity to warrent carrying a +P+ 115 grain JHP over a standard pressure 115 grain JHP or + P 9 MM?

I know the newer design Federal HST 9 MM are very popular today but the human anatomy has not changed since the +P+ 9 MM was popular with the LE community.   Some ole geezers believe if it ain't broke don't fix it.  So are the newer bullet designs significantly better than the ole +P+ 9 MM?

Good call. I will. In the mean time, here's this one:

I guess I missed that particular video bluefalcon.   To be fair my Agency was terrified of fratricide do to over penetration of a hostile and hitting a Friendly.   The 115 grain Winchester Silvertip was blamed on the failure to stop in the FBI Miami shooting which ultimately drove the industry to the current ballistic testing.  The under penetration of the JHP 9 MM was blamed for the failure to immediately stop a hostile felon.   Generally a handgun will never be able to obtain immediate sesation of hostilities 100% of the time with current technology.

Hense my request for you to test the current available 115 grain JHP ammunition.   Do the current 9 MM 115 grain JHP produce adequate penetration.   I still like the price and availability of 115 grain FMJ for practice plus it usually shoots close to the POA of my 115 grain JHP carry ammo.

The Winchester 115 grain JHP +P+  Q4174 load exhibits good penetration in barriers partially because of high energy and bullet construction.   I have previously chronographed the Q4174 out a S&W 3913 which averaged around 1250 FPS (back  in the 90's).  The Federal 9BP LE produced pretty high velocity out of your S&W.    Back in the 90's I chrongraphed the Federal 9 BP LE at around 1275 FPS out of 4" S&W 439.

When I carried the 3913 the +P+ 115 grain JHP produced a little more recoil and blast than a standard pressure JHP but used low flash powder.  The increase in recoil was less than going from a 38 Special to a 357 Magnum in a 2.5" or 4" S&W K frame.
