What would you guys say is the best .357 Magnum JHP for defensive use in such a gun?

I'd like it to be something that I can order online and probably heavier than 125 gr. since it's a K-frame.

The 135 gr Gold Dot in .357 chronographs at about 1050 in a snubby and is a slightly mild load. Otherwise, I would use a 158 SWChP such as those from Remington.

I'd also pick the 135 grain Gold Dot.

What do you guys recommend besides the Gold Dot?  I am seeing it for over $1.25/round and would like something less expensive.

Golden sabre. Mid-Range load, not a barn burner. Anything in 158gr 357.

The WW 145 grain Silvertip is another sleeper these days in 357.  Back in the 80's the Silvertip used a low flash powder plus a fully jacketed bullet which penetrates glass and steel better than the exposed lead 125 grain JHP.  The Silvertip is easier to shoot than the 125 grain or 158 grain 357 mag JHP.  I carried the 357 Silvertip in a model 66 4" on duty.

You cant go wrong with the original +p 158 SWC-HP. Compare your groups and recoil control to the other full house loads suggested.
IF you can find them....the vintage Federal 147 grain +p+ hydrashocks were the real deal.

I did a bit of research many years ago and ended up with the 110 gr  load for my .357 snubbie.  I don't have specs and it was over 10 years ago.  But that's what I'm sticking with.  Generally speaking, look for something that is lo flash.

I would go with this in the short barrel variety.
