I would not go back to the 1990's bullet and stick with the current RA9T unless I just got a steal on the old SXT stuff.

This is a new 2000's bullet design. It's just a descendant of the early Talon. It is new and improved you can say. LOL.

Here is a 45 in ranger T.

This stuff pretty good!? Thinking about buying a box of 500. No experience with this ammo in the past.

I used it back when it still had the black lubalux coat on it. Basically it is the Black Talon without the lubalux.

Any real difference between that and the ZQ4364 they also just got in?

Big difference. ZQ4364 is bonded and a modern bullet, as opposed to the SXT which is a much older design, doesn't resist plugging very well.  Given a choice, I'd pick the 4364 over the SXT any day.

If its indeed "same exact thing" as RA9T why would a government contract be awarded for new run of RA9SXT instead of just RA9T?

Is there some aspect that makes the SXT better than T?

Just seems weird that anyone would want a 20 year old design…..

Official word from Winchester:

SXT is not the black talon slug and is not RA9T. It has its own non bonded profile that is closely related to RA9T. RA9T is the new production Law Enforcement round and the SXT was made for a contract based on the terms of what was requested

When I asked about the powder difference he said that info is proprietary information.

Hope this helps.

Not to be too sarcastic and it's true that T and SXT aren't the "same exact thing", but regarding the "why want a 20 year old design" thing...

Even these new-fangled 'space age' glocks are a more than 30-year-old design, and I've been using a probably near-40-year-old load in my 9mm's (9BPLE) for decades now. Still as good as it was back in the day...

The 9BPLE is old school but fine ammo. I carried it and the RA9115HP+ back in the heyday of +P+ ammo. I later switched to the RA9SXTP 127gr +P+ then to the RA9SXT.

Have a few boxes of old win  ranger SXT 127gr +P+ Head Stamp 2005
I switch to the slower  and better performing win Ranger T 124gr+P

BTW

I wish win would put the DATE on the head stamp on the other ranger calibers and weights

I bought some of this "ZRA9SXTC" ammo from SGAmmo:

http://www.sgammo.com/product/winchester/500-round-case-9mm-winchester-ranger-sxt-147-grain-hollow-point-ammo-z-ra9sxt

I received it today; not exactly happy, though. Concerned, too, given that the merchant has no contact email or phone number...!

In one of the cases, about 50% of the ammo has something that looks like corrosion around the primers. I've never seen this before; some pics are below.

In addition, the part number on the web site (skew and part number on box) is ZRA9SXTC, but I received ZRA9SXT. I believe the C prefix refers to the primer type; I'm waiting for Winchester to confirm.

I filled out their "contact us" web app form; we'll see how they respond.

Has anyone seen this material around primers before?

Beuford

Edit:

I scraped some of the stuff off of a box and took it to the range. It seem to shoot fine, anyway. Nice soft recoil, very clean shooting. If not for this stuff around the primers I'd be very happy.

I'm not certain it's corrosion, although it looks similar. It seems to be small granules that look like sand but are much softer.

Beuford

PS: Anyone know what the "C" suffix means on Winchester ammmo? re: RA9SXTC vs RA9SXT

***** UPDATE ******

Well, customer service is excellent at SG Ammo. I've already received a response from the owner, Sam Gabbert. He assured me that it's just organic tumbling media from cleaning after assembly, but offered a full refund if I wasn't satisfied.
I scraped some of the material off of a few rounds, and it does seem to be a soft organic material. And, as I noted earlier, it shoots just fine (really nice, actually).

Kudos to Sam for his customer service. I would definitely shop at SG Ammo again.

Beuford

The material is just tumbling medium, which is pretty normal in winchester ranger ammo.  I have quite a bit of it and you find the stuff not only around the primer but in the hollowpoint itself.  It is GTG.

Can't comment on the C though.

It is media from the final cleaning. It does not hurt to leave it and you do not want to pick it out because you can remove the water sealant with it.  Some of my guns get thousands of rounds through them between cleanings. I generally clean every three years or 5k rounds if they need it or not.

Media

My 1 box of  ranger T 124gr+P had  media in the pocket and in the HP cavity.

I used a tooth brush and Duster to clean it out.

I didn't want media in my Pistol .
Other than that its GTG.

If you want some real Pretty LE ammo ? The Lot of Rem GSB9MMD 124gr Bonded is fantastic. Seald at both ends and the primer sealant is perfectly applied.  Must be done by a Elf.
Another good thing about GSB9MMD in 4 layer Gel Testing and using a 2.7 inch barrel the  GSB9MMD expanded consistently and in the Docs testing it preformed every d bit as well as the Famous 147gr HST and 124gr+P

BTW hotpig  thanks.
