Today I stopped in a local shop to pick up a small item and of course browsed around the gun case.

I spied a 85-90% condition 586 no Hillary hole for $399.    It fit my hand well with the Pach grips.  The only thing that held me back was it's a 6" and not a 4" that I'd like.

I'm not looking for a collector but a shooter, a holster gun for range or revolver comps.   Not that I'm an active pistol comp shooter by any means.

For the price I was even running the numbers on a re-barrel to 4", probably an additional $200 give or take some and whatever I could get for the 6".

I might go back and buy it anyhow.  I forgot to look which dash revision it was.

Your thoughts on the purchase and re-barrel?

My Python a friend and retired police officer wanted $300 for.  I paid him $400 because that's all I had at the time.  I made perfectly clear it was likely worth over a k at the time and he already knew it and didn't want the extra $100.  I made him take it.

I don't have pictures of the other two magnums so I'll throw in a pic of my pre17 K22.  It doesn't have the original grips or the box when I picked it up at the gun show and got it at a pretty reasonable price.

Derek,

Nothing looks finer than that deep bluing and a set of dark checkered target grips.   To me that is quintessential S&W and your gun oozes it.

GO GET IT!!!!

My dream gun back in the day (well.. till last spring) was a 6" 586, but I settled for a 4" instead.

Fantastic shooting guns and among the favorites in my stable.  The wife claimed it though.

6"are too front heavy for me. I've owned a few and let them all go. That said, at $400 I'd be hard pressed to say no, even with those Pachmayrs dressing it.

I've owned a bunch of both 6" and 4" over the years

Last year, I bought an old  6" 686-4

I didn't like the red ramp, so I bought this

talking to the gunmith, I thought, might as well cut it back to 5"
then thought, get a 7 shot cylinder and have it fitted also

I really like the 5"

It would be easy to pass for me, really hate the full under lug once the barrel is over 4". I'd hold out for a 4", but that is just me.

I agree with this but the S&W target grips were never a good fit for my hand . If the OP gets this gun (he should!) he should keep an eye out for a set of original grips . Weather he uses them or not they should be with the gun .

I love the look , history and workmanship of the Pythons but as a S&W guy I am not a fan of the way the trigger breaks on the Colt guns .
I feel
a 586 that is worn in is a better trigger. You also could do a spring kit and get something really special

I have a 686+(7shot) that I bought for plate shoots and I really like it .
I also have a 3" which is lots of fun but the 3" sort of limits it .

When I lay a tape measure alongside the longer gun 4" seems pretty good but somehow about 4 1/2 seems to call out to me .

Perhaps I need to search for another gun that my guy could do some barrel work on for me .

I really like the 586 but they are getting pricey and I don't think I could stand to mess with barrel length unless I found a basket case .

Also , even though the stainless doesn't look as nice it is great to be able to bang around with it and not really worry about the finish or looks

$400 for a pre-lock S&W L frame is a no brainer as long as the timing and finish are good.

I went back and bought it.

586-3  carried a little, shot extremely little.  Looks like a sock drawer gun.  A little bluing wear on the barrel at the muzzle sides and a scratch on the left side of the barrel.

$400 with the tax included.  They were very nice to me.

No pictures yet, I have to wait for it to get on my license.

I am indeed a weak man.

Nice score for $400 and the -3 and -4 are the best of the 586 and 686.

The custom 5" above is awesome!

That price sounds pretty good to me too.

Although I have become a 1911 guy over the last decade or so, this was the first handgun I bought the day I turned 21 (ohhh sooo long ago). 686-3 un-fluted cylinder, 6" barrel. Still have the old blue cardboard box and original grips and manual.  My youngest has laid claim to this one.

It's still my favorite one to take out and shoot, and it's ridiculously accurate.

That is pretty much the way I look at it. But.......for that price I might have done it anyway.

I saw a 4inch blued 586 in 95%+ condition at a local funshop but they wanted $600 for it. I was tempted but decided to pass. I prefer older S&W's.
