Who has experience shooting these models and what can you tell me about the differences?

I want a 6" no lock. Not sure Id ever mount a scope on it but I like the possibility. Think i want a -4 or -5.

686 no dash, introduced model
686-1, 1986, radius stud package, floating hand
686-2, 1987, changed hammer nose, bushing and associated parts
686-3, 1988, new yoke retention system
686-4, 1993, change rear sight leaf, drill and tap frame, change extractor, hogue grips
686-5, 1997, change frame design to eliminate cylinder stop stud, eliminate serrated tangs, change to MIM hammer with floating firing pin, change to MIM trigger, change internal lockwork
686-6, 2001, internal lock

Get the -4 or a -3 if you can find one.

I've shot several different variatons.  There really isn't any difference in shooting them.  The 686 is a solid gun throughout it's production.

The major changes are the MIM and the lock.  If you don't want a lock, then pre-6.  If you don't want MIM, then pre-5.  If you don't care about mounting a scope, any of them will be fine.

I bought a -4 locally just this weekend.  It has everything I want, and nothing I don't.

6" barrel makes for a very soft shooting gun, even with full house loads.
Don't overlook the 686-plus.

I see these for $700 plus. Can deals on something like this be found?
I am in no hurry to buy. Its a gun I will buy at some point though no matter what, so timing and $ are available.

I've owned a bunch 686's over the years

I bought a very clean 6" 686-4 last year for $675 with box, manual etc

(It's on it's way back from gunsmith getting the 6" cut back to 5")

I like the dash 4's the best

I'll post pics whn i get home tonight

Awesome. This is exactly info I'm looking for. Why do you like them best? Why 5" vs 6"?
Ok so $700 is pretty standard

Old enough to have the quality...new enough to be drilled& tapped for optics.

4"  vs 6" . . . .over the years, I've had several of each.

I've had other 5" guns, like the 629, 625, and even the Ruger superblackhawk.  I just like the 5/5.5" guns.
I like the way they balance

One thing I never liked was the red ramp sight.

I looked into getting a Weigand front sight base installed

and while talking to the gunsmith, I asked what it would cost to cut it back to 5"
we agreed on a price.

Here's what It looked like when I bought it....

I had a 586-2 also, but foolishly traded it for a 629
