Classic Model 15-4

Police trade-in, holster wear, but very little sign of being fired.

Picked it up last year for $235

Picked up this lightly used 28-2 and swapped out the magna grips for Thai hardwood targets.

Bought a used M&P 340 on GunBroker, then added DeSantis Clip Grips while I'm waiting on my AnR holster.

Will a Birchwood Casey alumablack pen work on the finish wear?

Niiiiiiice...

I say leave the finish.  Battle scars.  Looks good on there.  You'll just make more of them anyways if you carry it regularly.  Although my 442 did not wear all that bad after several years of carrying.  There was a little bit of wear but nothing big.

Took these maybe 2 months ago.

That ought to be a handful.  I took the Clip Grip off of my 442PC, got G10 magnas + a T-Grip on there and is far more comfortable.  One problem with the Clip Grip is it doesn't weigh anything...and yours is on a .357 that doesn't weigh anything...

It's mainly the silver showing on the rear sight that bugs me.
I'm not ashamed of honest wear.

I've been shooting 158gr monarch .38s and it's not bad. I have to say, I don't understand the point of the T grips. If you are already buying an aftermarket grip, why not get a fuller one to begin with? Does it do the job better than that option? I always assumed it was a cheap, non-permanent mod back in the day and people just continued to do it out of nostalgia. Am I missing the mark on that?

It's a bit of a nod to fashion anymore.  There are great finger groove style grips available for J frames.

I just picked up the Model 64 on the bottom at my FFL today.  Had the Model 65 in the middle for about 17 years and just got the Model 10 on top last year.

This makes 8 S&W revolvers for me - 4 of them K-frames.

I bought all 3 of these used.

Couple more S&Ws this week.  Both are early 2000s guns that shipped with 2 sets of grips (Ahrends wood/Hogue rubber).  I put a different set of Ahrends on the 627.

Love the mountain gun.  I didn't know they came blued.  I think I normally see a mountain gun, stainless.  Interesting.

The blue MG is a 29-8, I had one. I think they had some leftover frames from a run of model 29 Classics and used them to make Mountain Guns.

I finally decided I couldn’t abide the lock and sold mine.

They made some 6.5" standard guns with those frames as well.  Lew Horton took a bath on the Heritage guns, collectors didn't want to come anywhere near them and shooters didn't want a high-maintenance finish.

My first S&W was a 686 with the IL that I sold once I found a -4.  These two are my first IL guns since then.  I just received a plug for the 627 and will have to decide what I want to do with the 29 since there isn't a polished blue plug available.

I've still never found the need for a holster or finger groove grips.

Been looking at this one.
Your thoughts on it? Trigger, weight, shooting it, etc etc?

What other 44's do you own and how do they compare to this one?

I am very pleased with the pistol.  The recoil is manageable but it's surely not one for extended target practice.  The weight is fine along with the accuracy.  The DA is good and the SA is excellent.  I reload and shoot a 240 grain hard-cast and am very pleased with the accuracy and penetration.

My favorite .44 is my S&W 629-4 Mountain Gun.  The PC model gives you more recoil than the Mountain Gun.  Regardless I am going to carry it this hunting season as my back-up leaving the Mountain Gun home crying.

The other .44 magnums (Colt 6" Anaconda, S&W 29-3 6" nickel,  S&W 29-10 4" Blue, S&W 629-4 4" Mountain Gun and S&W 629-2 8 3/8").

IMHO I think you'll be pleased.

@DuneShoot

I really like it. Actually got in an argument in another forum about .44 vs 10mm for bear when some dude said he could put 10 rounds on target of 10mm before I could get two on with a .44.  The picture I posted was actually from that. Average splits for the first round were identical to my 3-gun which surprised me with the double action I thought they’d be significantly slower (1.4-1.7...I’m not fast).  Two shots in a 4.5” circle at 21 ft was averaging 2.3-2.6.  I did a four shot string in 3.6 and that was really unpleasant, too much for practicing IMHO.Anyway, old boy has mysteriously disappeared from that thread

I originally had some issues with the factory grips but no problem since getting the VZ’s on it.  (After 24 rounds)

Good info thanks.
I have $700'ish of Cabelas gift cards I need to spend. Considering this 44 or a Henry 45-70.

I permanently "unlocked" both of my recent N frame acquisitions.

Original Precision makes a plug to match the 627, but not the 29.  I tried to blue a carbon steel one, but it ended up looking more like the case hardening on the hammer.

Picked up this 686-1 at Cabela’s yesterday. I’m amazed by its trigger. I had one of the nice blues 586s with the wood grips s&w made a few years ago and it’s trigger was nice. This old 686s trigger is even better. At least out here seems like used revolvers sell for pretty cheap. Makes me wish I could afford to stack em deep right now.
