Is there supposed to be a gap in the lower left portion of the circular area?
From what I can tell, it looks like it was machined that way, but I figured it doesn't hurt to ask just in case.

Yes, it's supposed to be there. Mine has it, as does my friend's. Here's a pic of it on my full size PX4.

I thought it looked a little too clean cut to be a defect.
