Guy on another forum has a West German 228 NIB. His price is $1200.

Is this fair, or over priced?

Are the west German Sigs much better than their newer American made Sigs?

Way more than I would pay.  If it's truly new in the box it wouldn't surprise me if he gets that.  I have an old 228 and like it a lot.  No way in hell I would pay $1200 for one.  They're nice.  They're not that nice.

A West German 228 will have the old style folded steel slide.  American SIGs use a stainless steel slide that is a couple ounces heavier.  Much ink has been spilled arguing which is better.

That seems high, but there are very few true NIB W.German P228's, so maybe that's the going price.

Really nice, maybe once fired or extremely low round count WG P228's with box, target, original manual et al might bring $800 - $1000. In this group it's about collection value, not a range gun or carry piece.

I thought he was on the high side as well.

Thanks.

I bought mine like new, not sure it was ever fired, for $515.  One of the best buys I've ever made.

Some questions need to be answered though. Are you buying it with the mindset that you'll shoot it or you buying it to leave it NIB as a collector so to speak? If the former, then keep looking for another in the $600 range. If the latter, then offer $900. They're not making anymore carbon folded P228's. And ones that are truly NIB unfired are even more scarce. If you wanted to unload it 10yrs from now you won't have any problems getting the $900 back out of it granted you don't shoot it.

$1200 is a bit high even for a NIB one. If you are going to shoot it I would look for one that is lightly used. I think all the real P228 slides with the folded carbon steel are German. IMHO the W. German made Sigs are better than their U.S. made equivalents.

No but about 5 years ago.

It was definitely an exception to the rule.

That being said thats high for a NIB.

I admit I did not see that art of it and $700 is a little low but $1200 is high

I'm pretty sure W. German P228's didn't come from the German factory with night sights, so in that sense it wouldn't be NIB. Gently used W German P228's with all of the OEM stuff will bring upwards of $800 these days and they are getting harder to find. -- the gently used ones that is. You can find well used ones in the $500 - $600 range. I've seen some real beaters go for that much. Anyway, I wouldn't pay $1200 for it even if it was certified as NIB/unfired. I don't buy safe-queen-only guns, although I have a few but they are not unfired.
